Just finished the rough draft of Enchanter

40 chapters, plus I'll be doing an Epilogue when I finish the rewrite.  Over 200,000 words.  First 15 chapters have gone to the editor, and I've done the rewrite of the first 2.

It's a big book.  Stuff happens.  But some people might be bored.  Just sayin'.

Everyone else, though . . .

Postulus

“The fundamental goal of enchantment is to root the effects of a magical spell to reside within a physical object to improve its utility.  It is among the greatest achievements of thaumaturgical skill to accomplish even the most elementary of enchantments.  Once constructed and understood, the art of the enchanter can only improve with practice and repetition.”

  5. Terry. I am currently rereading your series but the nobility ranks are getting confusing.

What ranks sit between a peasant and a king and in what order?

  9. The basic social set-up in the Castali Riverlands goes like this:

    King
    Royal Family
    Duke/Duchess
    Count/Countess
    Viscount/Marshal/other titles
    Baron
    Baronet
    Knight Banneret
    Landed knight (Sire)
    Landless knight (Sir)/landed lord (Lord)/senior clergy/important professionals
    Yeoman/burgher/static clergy/master artisans/merchant
    Itinerant or junior clergy/tradesmen/reeves/bailiffs/manorial officers
    Freeholding commoners/pack merchants/minor officials
    Land owning free peasants
Free peasants who rent their land or hold it for service
Villeins - semi-free peasants who have a traditional right to serve/farm the manorial lands/indentured servants, indentured craft apprentices
Bondsmen - villeins who have contracted their labor to a particular master for a set period of time, usually in return for money or relief of debt.
Serfs - peasants whose families are "owned" by the manor, with few native rights. There are few Serfs in the Riverlands, though many in the Coastlands.
(Tal Alon fit in this space, in most places where they live among humans)
Chattel Slaves - practiced only in coastal Alshar, Castal and Remere, as well as Farise and overseas lands, chattel slavery is abhorred by most of the Narasi culture. But it is still legally tolerated.

That's the rough social class structure of the kingdom, but there are wide exceptions and places where local conditions skew the social importance of a particular class or rank.

    Hope that's helpful.

    1. Heh. Things won't necessarily go that smoothly, or in that direction. But yes, the social impact of magic will start to be felt in this book. And it will have a strong political effect.

  16. Greetings from Poland!

I have question about total human population on Calidore versus gurvani population and impact this proportion on long time war effort. A bit speculations...

    1. Assumed population Kingdom of Castalshar ~35,5 mln:
~10000 land domains - each average 3000 people (30 mln),
~1000 small towns - each average 2500 people (2,5 mln),
    ~200 cities - each average 10000 people (2 mln),
~10 big cities - each average 100000 people (1 mln).
    2. Assumed population Duchies of Merwyn and Vore ~40 mln? - older and more popolous duchies than Castal,

    Alshar and Remere.
    3. Assumed population City-State of Farise (now Governorship?) ~3,5 mln? - city Farise and surroundigs (circa 1/10 population Castalshar?).
    4. Unstarro (?) and other overseas territories ~10 mln? (???).
    5. Other wilderness ~5 mln? (???).

In total ~ 94 mln? Perhaps circa 100 mln humans on know parts Calidore.

Gurvani are living mainly in mountain area (Mindens, Kulines) plus recently conquered parts Alshari Wilderlands. Total goblin army (from Mindens and Alshari Wilderlands) number circa 1 mln. Assumedly this is 1/3 - 1/2 male goblin population in Mindens (combined population with female and baby/cub - mayby 6-9 mln). As much gurvani in Kulines. Plus few milions astray gurvani in others areas (~4 mln). So total goblin population in know parts Calidore is perhaps circa 16-22 mln.

    Humani-gurvani proportion ~ 5-1.

Average gurvani is smaler than average humani and required less food (but more meat). Know mountain and wilderness cannot support much more goblin population, regardless of speed goblin breed and grow. Gurvani baby (cub) mature in 5-6 year. To date goblins lost up to half milions male warriors (above 130 thousands in High Mage, above 100 thousands in Spellmonger and Warmage, several dozen thousands in Magelord and perhaps as much in between. So... Gurvani lost significant part male population (renewed only after few year) and are substituted by hobgoblins and orc (?). From mainly tribal and decentralized culture changed to centralized theocracy in state permanent total war. This is extreme social and cultural shock. Time to new goblin revolution? ;) At the same time humani lost perhaps only 1-2 mln people (mainly peasants), so basic proportion gurvani/humani is mostly identical as at beginning of war (even in proportion Mindens goblin versus humani in Castalshar. Border territories of Castalshar are now fortified and - in Alshar - mostly wasted and depopulate. Generally I see no possibility new gurvani offensive in next few years, at least direct and overland without participation Kulinines gurvani. More - I see no possibility final winning by goblin in long run, even with Dead God. But without destroy Big Ugly Green Goblin Head humani also not have capability for ultimate victory. With Dead God and combined might Mindens and Kulines gurvani might have chance in case unconventional attack (flank attack, teleportation army, airborne and/or seaborne assault, some kind of very grand spell, etc.) only against Castalshar, but not versus united and determined humanity. On the other hand if humani begin civil war or/and show up new enemy (Khorbol?) situation become more problematic. This will be very long war...

P.s. I apologise for my incorrect english grammar.
