Hawklady Now Available For Pre-Order, Release May 9th With Warmage Audiobook!

Hawklady, the second in my Spellmonger Cadet series, is now available for pre-order via the link below.  It will be released the same day as the Audiobook version of Warmage (which is also available for pre-order).  It's a trim 85,000 words, but it's a good adventure story featuring Dara.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0711DCPND?ref_=pe_2427780_160035660

The  cover ugly.  It's also the temporary cover.  It says so right on the cover.

And don't forget that you can order a hard copy of Hawkmaiden at this link:

https://authorcentral.amazon.com/gp/books/book-detail-page?ie=UTF8&bookASIN=1535050853&index=default

I'll have a hard copy version of Hawklady as soon as the art is done.

I really enjoy doing these cadet novels, and I think I'd like to do at least one a year from now on.  But I'm considering changing to a different character for the next one.  Perhaps one we haven't seen before.  But what kinds of characters (young people, please) would you like to see in the future in the Cadet series?  Discuss.

  1. Ruderal...

Maybe one of the Spellmonger's bastard children he hasn't met yet (assuming Ruderal isn't actually one of those :P ).

    Also, preordered :)

  2. Also, that was really quickly finished and released... I'm so used to authors that take at least 2 years to release their next book.. :P

  3. Terry,
Can you please make the URLs into hyperlinks. It will make ordering easier.

  5. You have to do one with Ruderal.

  6. Estasi is another option. What did she do to blow the barn up

  7. Personally I would enjoy the perspective of one of Mins nephews or nieces many one just coming of age in Svendor and wondering if they can become someone like there mighty Uncle.

  8. How about a topology and gatina. Learning to fence from the rigging of a ship.

    1. I have been trying to get ahold of you to see if I could purchase a hard copy of Spelmonger for someone who does not "do" Kindle. I owe him one because he turned me onto Wheel of Time, although I think your writing is superior to and more engaging than Jordan's - or Sanderson's for that matter. I would also like to pay for an additional signed copy - for me, if you are willing. I also tried the Author central account link you posted above and Amazon wanted to make be be an Author before it would let me in.
Please let me know because the guy I want to buy the book for is going through a hard time right now and a book by you would be just the prescription to make his life a little better.

  10. I am thinking that we should get a child that gives us an outside perspective to Sevendor and the Kingdom. It would allow us to see more of the actual human history of Calidore.

I am wondering if you could do a child from Amel Woods. They could be sent to Sevendor as part of the musicians and find their magic maybe apprentice them to Sigur to become a new hedgewitch/Spellmonger for the burgeoning domain.

  11. Maybe the little boy from Hawkmaiden who helped Dara with the cabin, can take us on a scouting adventure or two? Maybe show us readers more in depth how Dara's people are changing with the spellmonger around.
Maybe a cross over can be made with one of the young boys or girls from the march, how he or she decided visit sevendor or live there, i don't know. But a little kasari influence into Dara's people would only make them stronger, I would think. And may help explain what's under the fire;)?
Just tossing out ideas but I've always felt the story could use some more in depth scouts or rangers. I've always wondered why Min never started his own little Sevendor Rangers. With some Kasari learning and technical assistance, rangers could be traveling the entire domain helping people locally.
    Cheers all!

And thanks Terry, I'm looking forward to reading Hawklady!

  12. Also I've always wondered how the children of Sevendor where doing. Both the pre spellmonger and those who moved there. Maybe one of the poor villagers kids wants to be a knight or a scout, or merchant or well the possibilities are basically endless with the spellmonger around, then again maybe there not. But could be fun showing us the different towns in Sevendor.

    1. I was actually wondering about his nieces and nephews.. Terry never specified how many of them he has. But now that they are living in Sevendor and surrounded by snowstone and at least some of them approaching puberty, I expect at least one to show some Talent and ask Uncle Min to teach them

  18. I would be interested in reading about one of his long lost kids...maybe coming into their own magical powers...becoming a foot wizard ... journeying to Sevendor to meet the Great Spellmonger only to see that he looks just like himself...

Min would see some footwizard with a decent amount of power and then his mother or father could comment on the likeness to a much younger version of himself...only for Min to realize this is a long lost son.....

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It would have to be a pretty young foot wizard. Min's only thirty or so.

After the next few books though as Min moves towards forty it would seem more realistic.

  20. I'm not sure if the Tal Alon are unable to develop Talent, as we haven't heard of any Tal-magi, but if the Gurvani have, then so should the Tal. With that being said, a Tal that develops Talent that goes on to become an apprentice of Olmeg would be fascinating. You could cover a lot of issues dealing with prejudice and preconceived notions as well, a potentially powerful message in a Cadet Novel.

On a separate note, I would LOVE to get a story following Gareth, however, I don't want a Cadet out of it. Gareth studied as a Warmage, and there's so much more involved in that than just physical strength. If RPG's have taught us anything, it's that a mage is at his best when behind a strong tank (Tyndal and Rondal?). I want Gareth to use his smarts to devise a spell so ingenious, so powerful, and so disturbing that it leaves Wenek pale and at a loss for words!! :)

P.S. This is my first post, but I've followed this blog steadily. Keep up the good work!

    1. I agree Gareth is one of my favorite characters and it would be awesome for him to do something.

    2. I'd be surprised if the Tal Alon didn't have some sort of magical abilities.

All of the Alon, except for the Tal and the Trolls(Hulka Alon) so far seem to have magic of some sort. Gurvani have shamans, Karshak have stonesingers.. Dradrien are so similar to Karshak I imagine they have "ironsingers" :P

      Delete
    3. Most likely their "magical" abilities manifests in their ability to grow plants and how they brew.

      Delete
    4. Well they do have some sort of Magical ability. The group mind coordination is something that they have demonstrated its just possible that it may require conscious direction to enact under most circumstances. As the Tal were a subservient race at one time you could easily see them being magically guided for some tasks by their masters.

  21. Terry - Amazon says that it is only 239 pages...looking at your previous works I would not only call it trim, but expensive at $4.99 when your other works were much much ( 3 or 4X) longer for the same price...Is there a dedicated fan discount??

    1. I wish I had that capability. Send me a private email.

I adjusted pricing based on advice from my recent conference. If the experiment doesn't work, I'll drop it a bit. And if you don't think it's worth it after you buy and read it, let me know. I'll make sure you get your money back. Not trying to be greedy (believe me!) as much as I am trying to establish a pricing scheme that works with my format.

Apropos to that, many authors suggested that 400,000 words was just "Too Big" for a novel, even the tenth in the series, and wanted me to split it into two books. I don't wanna split it into two books, but the pros are that you would get the first half quicker and I could focus on cranking it out. Cons are the second part might take a little longer, you would be left at a definite cliffhanger, and you would be fretting at me just as impatiently for the second half as you did the first. Ironically, pricing and potential income aren't really factors in the equation, and they actually complicate things. But there were a lot of professionally compelling reasons for me to consider handling the release of Necromancer that way (and yes, I've already started it).

      Thoughts? Feelings?

      Delete
    2. I'm only 37% of the way through the book.. Its quite good and I'm perfect fine with the price, personally.

I would be happier with Necromancer being split into two different books too, as I would prefer to get part of it sooner than wait longer before being able to read it at all.

      Delete
    3. More sooner is normally my preference...but I absolutely hate a cliff hanger!! I would rather wait to get the completed work.

As far as price goes...I can afford it just wanted to see if that page count was correct and if there was a new era of pricing coming our way. I've seen lots of authors increase price on book 3 or 4 or 5...at least you are not charging hardback prices for digital books like some other authors.

      Delete
    4. Finish the whole book. DON'T leave us with a cliffhanger.

      Delete
    5. I'm not worried about paying the extra dosh - your books are always worth it.

In regards to splitting the book up please don't do that. Cliff hangers suck in novels!!!

Don't get me wrong - nothing wrong with having foundations for future books laid in previous books but leaving the fans waiting to find out what happens until the next book is a crap gimmick. I don't like it on TV when they do it between seasons of shows and for books its even worse!

      Delete
    6. Please don't start cliffhangers or splitting the books. One of the things I loved immediately about this series is the length of the earlier books. I really appreciate you not feeling constrained by an arbitrary number of pages somehow deemed appropriate, and instead seeming to rely solely on telling the full story regardless of how many pages it ended up being.

It would also make it harder for the reader I would think, in that it sucks waiting for each new book, but to have only gotten half a story and then be stuck waiting again for the conclusion would just be annoying.

Please don't start splitting the books.

  22. I'm a KU member so price isn't currently an issue, if not for KU I'd still purchase your works at as priced. I've repurchased the first two as audible books as I just love them.

As Ryndal mentioned faster is always better, however unfinished segments of the story would be very unsatisfactory. We have already been waiting for a resolution to Lady Alya's condition through two novels and a short story. Lady Alya's condition while not a cliffhanger or unfinished story is obviously a driver for what is to come, not to mention a foreshadowed resolution from Courtmage. Too many open threads between releases would be frustrating and unsatisfying.

    Thanks for this great series!

  23. Terry: read Hawklady last night and loved it! Can't wait till the next book in that series, cause it really is different perspective from her point of view. I gave it 5 at AMAZON.

  24. Hi Terry,

Read hawklady and it's not my favourite but I guess I'm not really the target group for this book. Still I found it good and liked the parts not at Cambrian so to say... I also liked his you fleshed out both Festlan and Gareth. But I think there is a small inconsistency regarding Gareth and the time of his witchstone in the battle... also the week of dragons is referenced to as an event after the magical fair while it in the book Angeles happens prior the magic fair (to my memory).

I like Gareth as others above also state a novel based on him and his savy logistic/ management skills in the perhaps in the new western lands of the barony would be cool to me :-)

Thanks for the new book and keep it up!

  25. I enjoy the Cadet novels as well. I think you have a wonderful character in Dara. She is pivotal in several encounters throughout the Spellmonger series but in the main line books she is always on the periphery. Her character seems a mix of Rondal and Tyndal. She is a brave and smart character and their seems a good deal of interesting things happening within her domain. She allows you to flesh out events in the main series and have a potential powerful character to wander off on her own adventures. For my two cents (which is more than they are worth) I'd stick with the well developed character that allows either fleshing out of events or individual adventures.

  28. So many comments, mmm how about a redemption story? I mean one centered on Sir Ganulan, he already seens to be on the mend for it and his character may offer some oportunities the other more straight ones just can't

  29. Rael and Nothoua might make interesting cadets. Bit of parent-child tension there. Also interesting female characters. Ruderal during the sevedor bouleuterion. Honestly just finding a home and a life is plenty enough narrative conflict.

On that note, as someone who reads proper novels to their kids nightly (Arthur ransome, e Nesbit, Ronald Dahl, etc.), may I offer the critique of hawk lady that the first 1/3 was a bit exposition heavy? Some great bits in there, e.g. playing with the magelight on the way home, but honestly I think you tried to give the reader way more world context than necessary, even if they hadn't read hawkmaiden. I think my kids would have started to zone out. (Won't be field testing they're still a bit young even for cadet books, sorry). And Dara doesn't need that context to work. "who am I", "my family is going to war oh noes", "am I interested in boys" is plenty to get on with.

  30. Terry,
You said it yourself inn Hawklady
“If Sevendor can produce such impressive girls in its first year as a mageland under the Spellmonger’s care, then what mighty warriors might it bring forth in the future? What great wizards will it sire? The experiment continues . . . for the early results, as Lenodara of Westwood demonstrates, are promising.

    Regards,

    Dan

  31. Just finished Hawklady, and I loved it! The cadet stories have all been special treats, and it's wonderful to hear that Terry is not only continuing them, but seeking fan input on subject matter. I think that a story about Pendandra's mercantile cousin Planus and his economic battles on behalf of the Arcane Orders would be intriguing.

That said, I do hope that we get one more installment of the Lady of Westwood, covering Dara's forming of her mews of giant hawks and the effort to recruit other riders from the Tal Alon and Sevendori. Please Terry, give us Hawkriders at some point!

    1. Upon re-reading the OP, I realized that Planus isn't one of the younger characters as Terry asked for suggestions about, so here's another two: what about the life of Minalan's youngest sister and the rest of his family for that matter, from their time in Talry through sheltering Alya, the wedding and relocating to Sevendor? That series of events must have been trying for them all.

The other thing that seems ripe for a story is forcing Lenodara and Alurra to work together given that while they're both brown mages, Alurra is much stronger in that regard while Dara has accomplished more and has been ennobled. I predict much opportunity for rivalry on par with Rondal and Tyndal's prior to Shadowmage.
