Updates! (UPDATED!)

Now that we've hit the mid-point of summer, I figured I'd give y'all an update on my progress.

As of this morning I've completed 40% of the rough draft of Necromancer.  And a goodly portion (about a third) of Trask's Odyssey.  I took about two weeks off for Scout camp, swim meets, and general summer maintenance, as well as a couple of great conventions where I promoted the heck out of Spellmonger.  New books have been ordered in preparation for the Baltimore Comicon, in September, so put that on your calendar if you are local and want to see me.

In other news, Magelord Audiobook is up for pre-order, and will be available July 25th!  I'm hoping to have the hard copy version available around the same time.  I'll keep you posted.

Back to the word mines.

UPDATE: Just approved the proofs for Warmage - you may now order the book in hard copy at the following address:

https://www.createspace.com/6939137

I will also be offering autographed copies for sale at the Baltimore Comicon and at Gallery 71.

That is all.

  2. Thank you Terry much appreciated, can't wait for Necromancer, and some of your promised side stories.
Maybe another anthology like the road ton Sevendor would be awesome, with interludes from Olmeg, Banamor, Sir Ryf's wedding, Joppo! Min's Mother even! Would be great fun, I particularly love the Wizard of Birchwood bridge & the road to Sevendor.
As I face redundancy and some horrific things in my personal life, I can always rely on your books to cheer me up, and give me something positive to look forward to.

We really only know his Dad so far and a little about his Mom. She hasn't even spoken and has really only been talked about by Min. Would also like to get to know his sisters and some of his nephew and nieces.

  5. Also, am I the only one that thinks that Tyndal and Rondal capturing the Spider and alientating him from the Brotherhood is a set up to eventually convert him into Minalan's personal head of intelligence? :P

He did have a lot of contacts outside of the Rats and was quite good at such a job... and now has nowhere else to turn to.

    1. You could never trust that guy...
The order/school of Shadowmages are going to be the next intelligence service

    3. Had to look it up lol - The great and powerful Iyugi! lol

    4. If Min can trust Lady Mask enough to give her parole, a witchstone and allow her to help Rondal and Tyndal, after she tried to kill his wife and children, I think he can trust an old spider with no one else to turn to who is desperately in need of protection from the remnants of the Brotherhood. The shadowmages are going to be working for Duke Anguin, not for Minalan directly.

Iyugi is a good spy, but he isn't a spymaster and can't be everywhere at once. Unless he's been gathering a network of footwizards to help him with that without it being mentioned in the book. :P

      Delete
    5. Iyugi has to have a decent network of like minded individuals or he would not be able to find out what he does. He is always pulling in info from far flung locations.

As to Mask, she was under the influence of the tainted witch stones when she did the bad stuff. Min also did not technically give her a stone, he was kind of forced to since she happens to win the Spellmongers Challenge. (and he really likes her dad)

      Delete
    6. Iyugi is good but I think running a team of agents is his limit.

Minalan doesn't just need a Spymaster he needs an intelligence head - i.e. someone who can organise a theft, arson, blackmail or murder when absolutely necessary. Not a pretty job but its a necessary one.

The only person who has proven she has the skills to run the network is Pentandra - unfortunately she has another job and doesn't really have the stomach for it. I suppose the new shadowmage who was friends with Lenguin could potentially do the job but I'm not conviced that he's cold and ruthless enough to do every part of it - the family are thieves not spy's and assassins and while that means they need a good ear to the ground that's not the same thing as running a kingdom wide intelligence service.

We need someone who is Pentandra like but can stomach making the dirty choices. Maybe Azar knows someone -- wasn't he working as an assassin in the eastern duchies prior to coming to Bontal vale at the beginning of this.

      Delete
    7. Maybe the newly raised High Mage, Lady Noutha (aka Mask). She seems to fit most of those requirements lol

      Delete
    8. She's more warmage than spy though. She ran some covert ops but again I'm not sure she has all the skills required.

I'd be fine with creating a new character to fulfil this role as long as he's interesting

      Delete
    9. With how things are going would be a fun twist if Rardine ends up the spymaster for Min.

    10. I'm terribly amused by this line of speculation . . . and will be terribly gratified to see the reaction to whom actually assumes this role. Heh heh heh . . .

  6. I agree that the Shadowmages will most likely start sending people for Glass to Min and he can easily convert many of them to his agents in return. It would be very interesting to see what loyalty transfers from Rondal to Min after the wedding...since they broke the brotherhood of the rat...he's free and clear from oath's so it's wedding time.

    ReplyDelete

    1. It wasn't just defeating the brotherhood of the rat Rondal also said he wouldn't get married until the orphan Duke recaptured southern Alshar.

      Delete
    2. What I'm worried about is that after Necromancer we will have a gap in narrative for a couple of years and the series will resume severla years in the future from Minalans son's perspective. And then all the marriages will have been done years before and they will just be referred to as Uncle Rondal and Aunt... summin(forgot her name)

      Delete
    3. I certainly hope that doesn't happen... The books from Tyndal and Rondal's perspectives were okay, but Court Wizard (Pentandra) was awful. I wish he had stuck with things from Minalan's point of view and hope he does so from now on..

Though I expect there will be a gap in narrative for a few years if only so the readers can actually see the completion of Sevendor Castle, Vorone Castle and Vanador (new city being built by Carmella).

Sevendor Castle was started like 7 books ago :P Ready for it to be near finished, personally.

      Delete
    4. Spartan813 - Totally forgot about the Southern Alshar restoration...maybe that will be the next part of the "Knights Magi" series. Although with the brotherhood broken and the Gurvani/Enshadowed fronting tainted Glass and "harvesting" southern Alshar's magic users I would think the Nobles down there will reach out to Min for help to fight back and it would be an easy thing to help restore Alshar from there. I'm sure Terry will put some different twists in place but I would have thought that the toppling of the Rats would have been harder than getting a few Nobles to get back in line...just need a bigger threat to them personally.

But like Jared mentions above, I like the Knight's Magi series, but the Min novels are the best and I hope we get a good 4 or 5 of those in a row with maybe 1 or 2 Knights Magi thrown in for perspective...but with that big City/Fortress being built I am guessing we will get 2 or 3 more Pentandra novels before the gang (from the first book) is all back together for a final confrontation/epic battle.

      Delete
    5. I won't mind a jump in time and seeing things from Min's son's POV, i just hope it doesn't happen soon, and when it does he is grown up (at least 17-20) and is a badass xD

      Delete
    6. I also enjoy the Min storys far more and (educated guess) Terry had a hard time writing from Court Mage (he finished the books before it in a few months and Court Wizard took over a year - yes I know that he also had problems in his personal life but its telling)

My biggest fear right now is that Necromancer is going to be a cross over with parts from Mins pov and parts from Tyn and Ron. Tyn saving the princess while Min gets the Celestral Handmaiden sounds about right and I wont comment on this idea... whatever.
Mins books sound like his diarys or the books he wrote as arch mage and ANY cross over with other povs doesnt fit into this style.

    1. I may have liked it better if it wasn't so repetitive..

Lost track of the number of times that the undead getting smarter was brought up and discussed among the characters and always as if it was the first time they had heard of such a thing. Maybe after the Great Rectification it will be better.. But I will likely still dislike it.. Pentandra was a pretty lame character from the start in my opinion and hasn't really improved. Plus I hate when prophecy gets too involved in a story.. A bit of prophecy here and there is one thing, but when its pages upon pages upon pages of talking about it... blah.. Court Wizard is likely one I will almost always skip when I reread the series.

    2. I love Penny, I feel she plays a very important part in Min's world. I love that we got to spend some time with her and how she is playing her part in the rebuilding of magic, she specializes in the long game. I also really enjoy prophecy being thrown in, and how Penny stays true to her character and reads the prophecys. And let's face it that she would have read it is already known. The many people working in the back ground for Min are all important and I enjoys every book very much.

      Delete
    3. Thanks for getting that . . . I think a lot of people downplay the importance of such "secondary" characters, when in truth those characters epitomize fantasy tropes that are vital to the story. It might not be the sinewy thighs of Conan, but there is an elegance and vitality to a Sex Magician turned mother that nicely frames the story.

And just wait until the Girls grow up. It will be . . . epic.

  12. Speaking of re reading the books. Does anyone else think that Isily is going to come back in Necromancer? Or that maybe the princess is not really a prisoner at all anymore?

    ReplyDelete
  13. I hope isily is completely out of commission. She hasn't added to the story other than provide angst to Minalan's mental state. I'm not sure about Rardine, I'm sure power is her goal. Extinction of the human race wouldn't be in her best interest. My bet is Alta will be influenced by the celestial mother and handmaiden. The result might be at odds with Minalan at times. We will see what Terry has cooked up. Excited by the next installment, but hate waiting

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think Rardine can be redeemed, maybe facing true terror shakes her, also the one human person i want to see fall is the queen, not even her predecesor seens so callous, and she was like that even when she was a princess (i can't remember what the correct title for a duke's daughter is), she is like a corrupting influence. She reminds me of Cersei. Only more competent and less delusional (she is still delusional and incompetent when dealing with certain things)

      Delete
    2. Just like Alya, Isily was hollowed out by the blast. Not only is she basically an empty vessel now, her body got all blueified and now she may be a super vessel! Maybe even a good fit for Korbal himself!

As for Rardine, I had been starting to feel bad for her as well. What started me thinking that she could turn traitor was the short story at the end of Enchanter called "Checkered Past" I do not think I read it until I reread the series. There is a prophecy in there that implied that there will be a traitor that shatters the kingdom. Rardine has not been happy at all since the kingdom was formed and she was relegated to being married off instead of being rewarded for her help in its creation. If they offered her power over the humani in exchange for her help . . .

      Delete
    3. Isily may become the vessel for the celestral handmaiden, they want to truly restore her and its said that they were also scouts (found things out for the celestral mothers or something like that)
We cant say that Rardine is evil, she did as she was teached and I found humor in the idea that she plays Penny on us: The striking (single) knight magi leaves a big impression on her and she wants him! If Tyn saves her that would make him baron (2 baronies for the savior of the princess)
Honestly, I dont like Rardine but Terry is not George Martin (thats why I love Terrys books) and I may get my happy end!

      Delete
    4. My happy ending would be Rardine being dead.

And I don't think Minalan would put the handmaiden into Isily, thats far too close to necromancy.

      Delete
    5. Isily is dead as was stated several times in Shadowmage. Anything further involving her would be necromancy and I don't see that avenue being opened up on Min's side. I know she wasn't dead at the end of Enchanter but Terry has made many changes like that from one book to the next.

      Delete
    6. Necromancy is when you use a dead body, this is more like giving the empty vessel a new mind ^^
(it starts with the point that the reanimated body no longer has the fundamental body functions (doesnt eat, no heartbeat ect.))

      Delete
    7. I just finished Shadowmage a few days ago and If it was mentioned by anyone, I do not think it was definite. Min was really the only one still standing on the roof when the big blast went down and he would not want many people to know that Isily was around even if it was in such a reduced capacity.

In the end though, I think Min will at least try to rebuild Alya but trying to recreate/fix her pattern (with the help of Ruderal) but what will wake up in anyone's guess.

With Isily though, I am sure the "Family" knows where she ended up and that means that Korbal likely does as well.

      Delete
    8. So far all the book titles have been directed at the main character (Magelord - Min when he took over Sevendor, Journeymage - when Min took the kids accross the wilderness. Shadowmage - Tyndal and Rondal were playing Spies the whole time)

If this follows the same pattern, then Min will be practicing some form of Necromancy.

one thing though is that I think even the patterns they have been using to make their new staffs and weapons is considered Necromancy as well so it may have nothing to do with Isily or Alya in THAT way at least

      Delete
    9. Is there a "definition" of Necromancy? Does it need to be reanimating a dead body or could it be using the Eneagram in something? To the point above, will Min start making active - thinking constructs - that are essentially copies of something? Could he take Sire Cei's pattern and copy it into a warrior construct such as the example from the story on the grain of pors with the clay warrior. He was already talking about something along those lines in Enchanter. Will he take the time to one up the boys' sentry at the rat trap with state of the art components, some glass for power, and enchanted weapons. He could send an "automation" into forward combat areas with translocation magic and let them kill anything furrier than themselves...could prove very interesting and be a decisive advancement for the war effort.

      Delete
    10. thats not necromacy... its called enneagrammatic enchantment and to be clear you CAN accomplish this with necromacy too but its a differemt way (the difference between animal sacrifice were you take a living mind and the grain were you use the imprint (record/copy) of the mind)

@Sir Loki: You may not know that Terry released a short story (the Spellmongers Yule) that takes place after shadowmage. Lets just say you should read it before Necromancer ^^

      Delete
    11. @Lodrik18 Yeah, I have read that (and listened lol)

Still pretty sure that Necromancy and Enneagrammtic enchantment are pretty much the same thing. There are many instances in the books where they refer to "dark Necromancy" or Death power vs Life Power but I think all of those end up under the same umbrella. The Censorite certainly thought so, that is why they locked up the Grain of Pors. As Ryndal above said, What would you call it if you took a body completely made of inanimate materials and then stuffed a fully formed Enneagram into it?

Even with the help of the Handmaiden, it will likely be a form of Necromancy that is what heals Alya. Maybe even that will be what ends up happening to Isily, being the host of the handmaiden.

      Delete
    12. Necromancy works with dead, to gather the energy released when something dies/to use a dead body. Its already in the word; greek: nekros = corpse
Alya is not dead and her mind is "only" fragmented so how is this related to necromancy at all? (we know what they are going to try, its different...)

Death & Life-force are polar opposites (the dead cant enter areas filled with to much life force) << like matter and antimatter

Any elemental is a Enneagram in a inanimate materials amd you dont have to give any Enneagram from the grain full awareness.
I get the feeling that you think to take any Enneagram from the grain means to bring this dead being back and thats your reason for calling it necromancy.

  14. Have been listening to the magelord Audiobook really good except that some of the errors from the book have still made it through for instance the Yeoman of Westwood is first introduced as Kyre instead of Kaman and it says he just obtained the westwood on his fathers death - which we know didn't happen now from both later in the Magelord book - and later books - and from Hawkmaiden.

  15. Only Terry knows how Alya will progress but I doubt she will be the same Alya we came to know and love. I'm hoping Terry will continue to write her in as a good character and a good partner and mother. She has been a secondary character even Penny has had more to do with the story development than Alya which I think is a shame. Terry has alluded to her having some magical potential (see the Spellmon gers honeYmoon and Magelord). I hoping that plays out as the story continues. I think families are the building block of any great society, so I am hoping Mins family stays whole conquering everyday and epic problems Calidore throws at them. (I'm not expecting alya to become a Mage but she does have the magical ability to bring people together and protect those she loves.)

  21. Just finished reading the series 1-9 and all i can say is i truly hope that book 10 gets back to the main story... i cannot express how truely annoying it was to open book 9 and see once again it was in the past and there was 31 chapters before it even caught up the the last books timeline.

this has the potential to be a great story if it would stop hopping around in different timelines. I might not have be so bad if there hadnt been 2 books in between the main story.

I did not particularily enjoy the court wizard book, it had its interesting moments but there was so much filler and repedative conversations that had already happened and for some reason the characters seem to have just forgotten about.

All i can say is if the next book is not about the minalin and the main story then i think you will have lost a loyal reader, there is no way im going to wait another year and a bit to find out what happens i will simply move on

I didn't mind seeing a lot of repeating conversations and what you've called "filler" the way I see it, a lot of what happened in the last two books is the jumping off point for everything to come - maybe we could have done without it, but I imagine it would have made certain things coming up seem like a deus ex machina

    4. If it makes you feel better, in Necromancer I've had to go back to literally every other Spellmonger book and short story. A LOT gets resolved in this one. Then again, a LOT gets seeded for the second series. Incidentally, the first 10 books (decaology?) are called "The Spellmonger Ascendant". The second ten shall be known as "The Spellmonger Exiled" for reasons that become obvious by the end of the book. And that could be seen in a lot of different ways . . .

  22. I don't think you'll be disappointed. It's about 90% Minalan (you'll understand when you read Necromancer why I had to do the other 10%). And the plot advances - quickly. I just finished Chapter 44, and am headed into Chapter 45. Tying up most of the outstanding plotlines, adding some new ones. But this one is hard, I won't lie. Should be announcing the release date sometime next month.

On that note in both books Ocajon stated he would be "resurrected" if he died. Would he some how retain any memories from that time he was out and about or revert back to what he knew when last his Lord copied his enegram? I think he loses all the gained memories but would like a confirmation.

    1. Are we sure the enegrams are copied? I was under the impression that they returned back to somewhere else after the vessel containing them was destroyed.

      Delete
    2. I figure they are copied and stored somewhere because if as you say they have a "save point" they retreat to that means there is something out there that can over ride the pull of the other world. And if that is true there is no reason for Korbal and such to need the ghost rock because they can just search and pull any enegram from the other world.
I do realize in court wizard Ocajon states "Slay me, and my master will merely call me forth again...", this could mean what you are saying. I don't believe it is that simple and am asking just for clarification if it does not spoil anything.

    3. I think in the conversation with the one that Penny had out at the witches house they said what happens. From what I remember when they are "killed" again their minds do not disappear, they kind of hang around like a cloud of essence that if gathered up and placed in a new vessel they do not lose anything. If they are out of body too long then they have to go back to the template and they would lose all memories

    4. That works as a sort of half way.

    5. I think this goes towards being soulbound. They are bound to this plane and cant move on, staying incorperal until they get a new body (think Lich/Voldemort). Thats also why Kobal cant do this with any dead being, they were bound while alive and willingly.

  27. If only the book was out...we could learn the answers to all these important questions. T-minus 1 month and counting...until the release date is known. Anyone want to do an over/under on the release date? I am guessing it will be out in time for Thanksgiving...I'm an optimist though.

    1. I only want Terry to tell us when the book comes out once the draft is finished (profreading ect left)
It leaves a bad taste when the author changes the publication date several times (George Martin is not alone in this and many authors keep the issue quiet long after it becomes clear - had once a book you could preorder on amazon and the author didnt meet his deadline (thats been around a year ago and the book still isnt finished))

We are happy to wait, please write another great book Terry (thats all I hope for)

    2. I'll make the release date announcement at the Baltimore Comic-Con. But to give you some idea, I cracked Chapter 60 today. The book is now over 300,000 words. Almost there . . .

  31. Terry a question, the next cadet book (Dara's books) what timeframe will it cover? will it include enchanter? Is just that i am curious abot what Dara was doing (i think something happened that involved Fes and maybe Garret too) that and it was remarked that Min's mood was affecting sevendor and others and i think seeing it all from Dara's eyes will be really instructive and informing.

    1. Don't think he's doing more Dara cadet books.. he has stated he is looking for other characters to do some cadet books about.

    2. Shame, i am really interested in that love triangle xD, oh well it could still be resolved in the main books, or a short story or even other cadet book from another's POV, like say Garret's.

      Delete
    3. The next cadet book will be Sky Rider, and will cover the period in which Dara develops her corps. The love triangle will continue to play out in Necromancer.

    4. After Sky Rider, Dara's trilogy will be complete. I'll turn to a male protagonist among the Kasari for Book 4 of the Cadet series.

Update on facebook that the author has completed a roughdraft of Necromancer. At 80 chapters it will take some time to go through edits and revision but lets all give the author a hand for his hard work.

  34. Hi Terry, love your books. Can't read them enough. However, can you (or anyone) clear up something for me. In Magelord (around location 18059), as Minalan returns to Sevendor he sees the village and this follows:

"In one scant year, the place had more than tripled in size. Where once a dozen hovels stood, now there were three dozen stout, well-built structures of brick, wood, wattle-and-daub, some roofed with thatch but more and more roofed with more-expensive but far more durable clay tiles. Sevendor Village was prospering..... "There was a village council meeting, and it was pointed out that there are almost three thousand souls within our limits, now. That is far too big for a mere village."

I know it is a small thing within the entire book, but the incongruity of 3000 people fitting in 36 structures really jars me whenever I come to the end of the book. Is there something I'm missing here or is this just a little mistake regarding numbers?

    Thanks

    1. I always assumed they were a type of long house (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Longhouse), which can hold upwards to 90ish people.

      Delete
    2. You need to see some barrios or favelas, they can easily fit in those xD

      Delete
  35. I assumed that they were not the only buildings in the village, literally the new buildings had replaced the dozen hovels, and that others were built as well,

  36. Earlier in the boon he said each "hearth" could hold up to 30 people and there were 2000 refugees that came with Min if you assume that they are living in cramped conditions put each hearth at 40 and you have 1640 in the village and maybe 400 at the castle/tents plus the couple hundred at the new village in Genly which might be included and the numbers work. Granted I'm using fuzzy math but it can kind of fit.

    1. good points but it were 2000 with the second group, the third group came in the second year (remember they retook Brestal 2 days before Yule to house the second group)
So its at least 3000 refugees from Boval

      Delete
    2. I should also point out that Sevendor had a lot of Bontal valley emigrees as well. Artisans such as the carpenter and such but also those who were working clearing weeks and roadways that Cei mentioned.

      Delete
    3. There were just under 4000 Bovali refugees, total. For the record. (about 3890, give or take.)

  38. You also need to rembemer that there could be quite a number of people in new yeoman holds or filling up older holds now that they are trying to occupy the entire vale. Granted it's fuzzy math to get it to work but it can work. When Min looks over Seven for he also doesn't mention any differences between dwellings and various shops and other buildings that have been commented on through the book. This could be an oversite on the authors part but adds the possibility of an additional 10-15 buildings that could be part of the growing "town".

    1. I didn't mention the new construction of every building, but you can imagine that folks boarded with whomever they could, until whatever lodgings became available were built. From a medieval perspective, having a whole lot of lodgers in one building was not unusual. And such arrangements would be common until proper housing was built.

  39. Little question but in court wizard before the zombie attack on the palace Alurra mentioned a bunch of events and individual, there was one that i am still trying to figure out: The Grandmaster, is there any hint as of now to who that is? or do you people think that character has yet to appear? Also Terry feel free to tease us, at least say if the person has appeared yet or not please!

    1. Surely that refers to the new leader of the Knights of Nablus. Given the prophesy about him submitting to the Spellmonger's rule.

  40. The Grandmaster is the leader of the Knights of Nablus, a group of former Censors in Merwyn. The character appears in the short story "A Checkered Past". The story appears at the end of Court Wizard after some definitions and such.

  41. So far I am in love with the Spellmonger series. I hope that the other books will ultimately be recorded and made available on Audible. I am losing my eyesight, and due to severe eye strain, I can no longer read for more than about 10 minutes. I converted my living room into a library and I don't own a TV. I have not subscribed to any TV service in the last 20 years Loss of eyesight in an avid reader difficult. I am so thankful for audible and other companies that make recordings of books.

    1. Good news! Podium has purchased ALL audiobook rights, to all current and all future Spellmonger books. Look for the next one to be out within the next month or so, and the following out early next year (probably). While my YA series probably won't hit there, yet, you can look forward to the main series continuing to appear on a regular basis.

  44. When will Trask's Odyssey be ready?
I have read both Prince of Tanith and Princess Valerie's War and enjoyed the series. I found Space Vikings by accident about 5 years ago and it has become my favorite story from H Beam Piper. I have read and enjoyed other H Beam Piper books since then.
I think Piper would be proud your continuation of what he started.
The only thing I don't like are the cliff hangers. LOL!!!
