    5. A tricoder can be compared toa VERY small MP3 player (think of gift cards with songs)
This one is working centurys after it was build (gotta love sf-engineiring)

I dont think your techomancy would work out. The perlvenese(or however they are spelled) didnt manage that so it seems unlikely that people without the technical know-how manage this wonder. (something like magic fueled batterys/electronics seems possible, they know about electricity and the series had hints about acient vaults *full of secrets*) ^-

      Delete
    6. About the technomancy, i was thinking that there are probably more humans out there, and we also know there are other worlds with a magosphere, so suppose another expedition found one of those worlds and they expend close to a thousand years experimenting, then those humans may or may not adopt mix of magic and tech (i am thinking shadowrun but without the steampunk, or the imperium but less nazi), wether more humans will come from space or not is another matter, for all we know the sea people decided to hide their world after the humans arrived

      Delete
    7. when the world has a magosphere, it take quite some effort NOT to lose that powers once you go to space...

      Delete
    8. Wich is why that human civilization needs tech, the other races that were invited aparently used some sort of portal (at least that is how i understood it) but these humans with tech could use many methods to not lose the magic, helped by tech: they could invernate during the trip, they could make an artificial magosphere in their ships, they could use drugs, etc, anyway this is almost a moot point, while it would be really interesting to see a group of really advanced humans arriving to see what has happened, that is something that probably won't happen, although who knows (terry obviously) with 30 books, anything could happen.

  9. The forsaken have been revealed!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. how do you figure that? She never mentioned them by name, so what are you talking about?

      Delete
    2. Has anyone considered the humans on calidore are the forsaken. That the line from the prophesy could fortel reestablishing contact with the human ship - which I'm guessing is actually called the "Horizon".

      Delete
    3. I was thinking the forsaken were those humans who didn't like the magical coup, and so they forsook the rest of humanity and took some technology with them to establish themselves separately from the rest of humanity, but eh.

      Delete
    4. Also totally possible. By the forshadowing at least I'm guessing we eventually will cross path's with the Horizon though. I'm looking forward to that.

      Delete
    5. @Dark Prophet - I am with you on the ship - first Briga says that "humanity appeared on the horizon" which can be taken a few ways until she then says that "settlement stopped as the "horizon" was withdrawn beyond the moons"
THAT is pretty suggestive of a mother-ship that used to reside in orbit that is now parked on the dark side of one of the moons.

As to the forsaken, at this point I am leaning towards a master computer that holds the total sum of what science they had accumulated until the Inundation. It never did make a lot of sense that a society that was smart enough to invent interstellar travel would place all their eggs in one basket and allow all knowledge to go to rot. They may have made a conscious decision though to set it aside until a later date. Like stopping the colonization and sending away the mother ship . . .

      Delete
    6. I had thought that the forsaken where the cosmic gods that they set aside. I forget which book but there were reference to the forsaken judging society. Then with this short story they basically said they were afraid of being judged

      Delete
    7. I thought the same about the forsaken being gods of some sort. I also thought it was odd that after the big talk from book 2 and such that the Order of the Tower( or what ever they are called) has not done very much to free them as that is supposed to be their whole purpose. After reading this though, we know that gods come about from shared belief and that what gods were able to manifest was controllable to a certain extent by focusing on the religion. If the forsaken were really old gods, then the only thing "locked away" would be the old bibles and such right? Even if they got out, there would be no immediate manifestation as it would take a long time for the belief to build up.

What got my attention was how we were told that the first Magocracy was actually a rebellion against the first Colonial government and the reason was the advent of Magic. From what I remember, that was when they started easing back on Technological advance and they began elevating the new found mages to the aristocracy.

So if there was something that the early settlers forsook, it might just be their more advanced tech. Like the Horizon or other even crazier tech.

I am leaning to some kind of Fusion reactor that they built on old Perwyn to power their tech. There was also that story of the engineer that stayed as the island sunk. They said he was trying to save the island but what if he was an early member of the Order of the Tower? He stayed behind not to save the island but to make sure the super computer was protected from the sea water!

      Delete
    8. If I recall correctly the Order of the Secret Tower doesn't know what they are supposed to do with the Forsaken only that they are important. It said that their job could either be to release them when needed or conversely to keep them imprisoned.

I don't think the forsaken are the cosmic gods though. If they were then they would surely no longer be as dangerous as no humans on calidore worship them anymore.

Wow, i loved it, it has a little of everything, information, some clarifications along with more world building, some hooks for the next books, romance and a little heartwarming, lots of humour, and something i really needed to see: Min being a badass! nothing like slaughtering some Alka Alon to stablish someone as badass.

  13. Ok i got Santa, batman, and popie does anyone know who the character with the winged helmet and magic strincth potion is?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Magic Strength Potion....perhaps Terry is testing us with a little known French Cartoon Character Asterix. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asterix_(character)

Perhaps there was a French contingent with the settlers and the kids were getting too much magic water and their very vivid subconscious was activating the deities. Who hasn't as a kid said to their friend.. "Oh yeah, my superhero can totally beat your superhero!" "Who would win in a fight between Batman and Ironman?"

      Delete
    2. Asterix was invented in french but he is known through westeurope (just like Mikey Mouse comic books, they come from italy and never became popular in the US)
Its rather the fandom, kids celebrate heros, they love and want to be them. This true believe created the gods. And some comic villians are really powerful, so the Alka lead humanity away from those ideas (that in turn lead to legends of the forsaken).
Its several times said that the gods are the way humanty images them to be, so even gods created after the image of real people are stuck in the way humanity images them (Horus and Briga refered to their human lifes and the begs the question, did the people creat the god after the image of man or did the people identify man with already existing gods).

      Delete
  14. In the book series "The Demons of Astlan" gods have a "godpool"; the idea is that people send enery with prayers and this energy gets stored for use as the god commands. Do gods in this series have something similar or does the number of devotes not matter? This question has big implications regarding the power of the forsaken...
(I only remember that gods manifest specially when its part of the religious idea (the god of storms manifests in BIG storms) and when the people have rituals to "invite" them (like the ritual that was used to invite Ishi)

  16. Terry i have a question about Hawklady, can you tell us more or less wich time frame will it run in? i mean will it run at the same time as Enchanter, Court Mage and Shadowmage? or will it be after them? Is just that there are a lot of hints between all those books that Dara may have been doing interesting things, and not only the love triangle (wich BTW i totally ship her and Garret!)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Dara+Garret was already hinted in Hawkmaiden and I really hope they come together. Its not "typical" for Terrys books (he explained his/the realistic view in Knightmagi), but Garret seems like a smart and brave guy so I root for his happy end. (After Rondals part in Shadowmage, I feel reasurred about this)

  17. As much as I love the idea of exploring more into the past with the tekka and everything about the technology, I am a huge fan of fantasy. I like the idea of talking about it maybe using some of it here and there, however I am hoping it's more of an informative piece and not leading this story into a sci-fi fantasy novel. I like the idea someone used previously of maybe combining some tech and magic together. I also loved the references. In the story the term forsaken is not expressly mentioned with a group. However if I remember correctly the forsaken were on perwyn when it fell, and I was curious if this is supposed to be a link between the first manifestations and the forsaken. Love what you have accomplished and I can't wait for Hawklady and Necromancer!! Oh and now that Rondal is spoken for, I am curious to see how you might tame Tyndal.

    2. I too have been thinking Tyndal may hook up with her.

      Delete
    3. I am thinking Tyndal and Mask....
Rardine and Duke Anguin... because a dragon attack wipes out the Royal family ... Anguin and Rardine marry to provide leadership and better unite the people. Just a theory ...

    4. I dont know, they are cousins...

      Delete
    5. Used to happen with nobility all the time...either that or she will be ever so thankful to the "Shadowmage" that rescues her while Min is off fighting the battle to get to the ghost rock.

      Delete
    6. I think the Royal Family will just be wiped out along with a significant portion of the power structure in the kingdom. Rard probably has time to die of natural causes but Grendine and especially Tavard (and likely his infant son as well) have to be killed off - hopefully in some suitable spectacular way.

Same with Vore and Merwyn. It would take something pretty extreme to set the stage for Minalan to accend to Archmage - i.e. for him to be Archmage the Kingdom would have to be reorganised into the second Imperial Empire. It would take something extreme for that to happen.

      Delete
    7. Eh, you're assuming that the King can't appoint him to the title of Archmage without giving him all temporal power in the kingdom, too. He could be given the title and pretty much just remain as the head of all the magical orders in the kingdom as a thanks for rescuing the King's daughter and eliminating such a big threat to the Kingdom (Korbal and Shereul)

      Delete
    8. Even if the king doesn't give him the power the title of Archmage has historical baggage such that people will assume Minalan has the power. And there is the unofficial power as well.

      Delete
    9. Yeah thats the thing - and the reason that he was made Head of the Arcane Orders and not Archmage. Archmage denotes the leader of the empire both in Magical and Temporal terms - at least as I understand it.

Although I think this would be more of a modern - read Narisi - perspective. In the time of the empire I don't think there would have been any division in the perspective. To be the ruler was to rule everything including magical policy.

      Terry any input on this?

      Delete
    10. I think its probably more likely that he wont become Archmage for several books yet.. After all, Terry is planning another 20 books in the series after Necromancer. And I'm betting if the Royal family is removed from power it'll be due to a rebellion by Anguin (with the Spellmonger backing him because Grendine and Tavard pissed him off somehow).

      Delete
    11. In fact I'm guessing that once Minalin destroys Korbal (and possibly Shereuel at the same time?) and there is an actual peace between the remaining gurvani and humanity that the Royal family will have little use for the Spellmonger any longer and be threatened by his existence and power. Eventually the new Sevendor castle will be finished and since it exists it'll probably be besieged not long after.

      Delete
    12. I would think that Min would rather be like a High King. Leave the existing ruling structures in place and he would only need to oversee from his new capital city of Sevendor

      Delete
    13. Reading through the series again I'm seeing that it seems that the Archmage didn't actually have much temporal power until the later days of the Magocracy (after the stupid Archmage through all the irionite into the ocean near Perwin) and was more interested in the study of magic than anything else

  23. Hi Terry,

I wasn't sure how to get in contact, so I thought I'd post on here. I'm a big fan and voracious reader and I have a remarkable (if I do say so myself) memory for detail in books. I've read all of the Spellmonger series multiple times and I <3 them all. However, I have noticed a few inconsistencies in the overall story arc (Kamen vs Kyre for example) and a few typos. I wondered whether you wanted another beta reader? I'm pretty fast and already do the same for other self-published authors (but only the ones I love reading!)

    2. May I suggest that Audible post this info on the series? I stumbled on your book because I like John Lee as a narrator*, and now I want to know the rest of the stories. I found this page because I wanted to know whether I should wait a bit for the audiobook, or just buy on Amazon. Now I know I will wait....but Audible should have been able to tell me that! (If you click on the series, it lists them all, but says "Not available on Audible.com") By the way - I love the first book. Thanks!

      * - If you ever wondered whether a narrator brings in fans, wonder no more! When I am looking for books to listen to while running, I frequently search by narrator and try someone I've never read before. Sometimes, like now, it works out great. Sometimes, it's not as great, but at least I enjoy the voice! That's important.

  26. Terry, Did you give the OK to have John Lee perform your book the way he does? I swear, to me, he sounds like Garkesku should sound. It feels pompous and forced. Will Mr. Lee perform for all the Spellmonger books/series? I know Mr. Lee has won several audio awards but I am a little bit disappointed. Either way, I will still buy all of the audiobooks :)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. To say that you dislike his performance and will buy it anyways seems rather childish to me...
And to hint that the voice actor should be changed shows a rather big sense of entitlement (who do you think you are?)...

      Delete
    2. So they're not entitled to their own opinion, or able to provide honest feedback?

      Delete
    3. they MAY BE entitled to enjoy the books and give honest feedback. They are NOT entitled to read a 20 book series and say that they hated the series from the start (why read on then?).
Ok, I suppose my first post was uncalled for but seems cracy to me how demanding readers are. Like, "Ms. Rowling made Dumbledore gay, but she didnt do that in the books and thats wrong, we can only hope that she corrects this mistakes with the new movies coming out!"
ITS HER STORY, so criticism is fine but I dont see at all why people read on when they dislike the book. ("I dont like the reader but I am gonna get ALL audiobooks anyways...")

      Delete
    4. Aside from misrepresenting what the person said, it's still pretty childish to rant like that. They didn't say they hated the series from the start, just that they didn't like the voice actor in the first audiobook. The purchaser can purchase the whole series and not like one aspect - AND feel free to comment as such to the author, especially when there's time to change if others felt the same way. Weird how committed you are to defending such a ridiculous response.

  32. Unrelated to the latest release, but I'll post it here since the thread always moves to your newest post - it occurred to me that most steel ends up with some amount of silicon in it (not too much, 0.2% is a benchmark for certain modern swords) and I wondered if a wandering Mage might notice the difference between Sevendori steel and it's more mundane counterparts (although I don't know how advanced the sevendor smithy is).

    ReplyDelete
  33. The steel would also have needed to be present during the transformation or mined it out of the affected snow stone...but an interesting point to consider.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. No it wouldn't as we know that adding snowstone to staves lowers the magical density in the area and makes them better so if you forged a sword with .02% snowstorm Silica rock you would make it a better mage blade

      Delete
    2. This is pointed out by penny's staff he made.. sorry can't remeber the correct terms atm it's 6am and I'm going to bed - but te wood it was made from was not native to sevendor

      Delete
    3. Yes, if you work it in...and I am sure that Cormoran has done such things when crafting weapons. But from what I have read (I could have missed something) they imported their first blacksmith and others have probably migrated...but they do not have an active iron mine or smelting operation yet. So all their steel would have to be imported.

And yes mounting snowstone in the pommel of a sword will reduce magical resistance but I would really like to see if an Iron Ore can be found that was magically changed with the mountain and what happens when Cormoran builds weapons with "inherently magic metals".

      Delete
    4. From what I can tell, most ores don't have silicon in them, but there is a long history of ceramic blades, and given that sevendori clay has been used in enchantment, I can see such blades being used

      Delete
    5. I believe we are talking about quenching (cool the iron in water), its anyways done by smiths and it should be possible to add silicon this way

      Delete
    6. Actually the iron for the steel would not need to be produced locally. Remember steel is an alloy made using carbon and various other metals depending on the properties needed in the steel.

If the charcoal used to make the carbon was produced from wood grown in Sevendore(maybe even weirwoods to give it extra properties) wouldn't that produce some interesting properties. All they would need to do is build a smelter locally - not a huge chore - or they could produce the steel using a more eastern technique.

I agreed that Iron Ore that was altered would be interesting but the chances of just stumbling across a deposit in an area not known for Iron would be slim. The only chance they might have would be if the Earth Cores on Calidore were radically different and had Iron Ore much closer to the surface but I'm pretty sure Terry already said that calidore had less Iron Nickel in its makeup than earth but was a larger planetoid which is why the gravity and such is similar.

Unless a spell was used to gather enough trace elements out of the soil the chances overall are slim. On a final note I don't think Iron in proximity to the effect would change at all. Remember that the folk in Sevendore would have had a myriad of swords and other steel or iron implements. They would have to have been alterered too.

  36. I love your work. I don't know how often you read this blog, but I hope you see my post. No, matter how often you/your publisher release's your books. Every book I've read that you've written is very, very, good.

I suppose that the exact type of fantasy/science-fiction book that you've written is exactly what I favor in terms of....really everything I look for in a book.

You have VERY admirable and realistic character progression (whether female or male) and you really bring the world/universe to life for me. The only thing I don't enjoy is the shift away from Minalan and towards Pentandra and Tyndal and Romnal.

What I mean by this, is that while I enjoyed those books (VERY MUCH) I would have enjoyed more about Minalin and/or Dara and the growth of both Greater Sevendor and Sevendor Vale(including Brestal Vale.)

I suppose what I want to say is that you are an amazingly good author, even without w/e publishing company you are currently involved with.

Anyway, I love your books. Especially Magelord and Hawklady. They give insight into a world I am, personally(as an American) mostly unfamiliar with.

I would love to see the growth of both Greater Sevendor(and your plans to fortify it against the goblins/dead god and the building and management of the new city that Pentandra deals with in Court Wizard. Also, your plans for Alshar now that the young Duke can legitimately press his claim for Southern Alshar.

If you read this, then THANK YOU.

Obviously you don't have to implement any of my ideas, and although I feel It would be beneficial to the series, I could very well be wrong. Thank you nonetheless for simply writing this series. I genuinely love it and the world/universe you have created. :D

  40. My current theory is that Tyndal will rescue Rardine from the Necromancer and that the experience of being a captive will change her viewpoint of Mages and Tyndal in particular. This will bring her into conflict with her parents who do not believe in the tru danger of the dead god, I mean they have a 'TREATY'. I think this will lead to Tyndal marying Rardine at some point(Knight Magi in shining armor rescuing her from the dread sorceror template) and this will make her an ally of the Spellmonger. Eventually the dead god will break the treaty by using the molopor to send troops directly to Castalshars capital and will assasinate all the royals bar Rardine who is with Tyndal who a) escape together or b) were never there. This makes Tyndal the next King who will elect Minalan as the Archmage, not sure if that will be a temporal post or ...

    3. I second your Rardine wants to marry Tyndal after the rescue but not in a good happy lovey dovey way but more in a I want to have absolute control over all the powa!!

    4. I could see Rardine surviving the rest of her family dying but I'm inclined to agree with Jared McClure - would like to see her come to an unlovely end!

    4. It's coming. I'm designing the new website (spellmongerseries.com) now, in addition to finishing up chapter 13 of Hawklady (plotted at 17 chapters), preparing for the upcoming release of the Warmage audiobook (probably 2nd week of May), preparing to attend the Smarter Artist summit in Austin next week as a guest of Podium, approving the final artwork for the new Spellmonger Series convention logo (and a wicked cool pic of Shereul, done by Lanse of Bune!), working on maps for an Atlas of the Five Duchies, finalizing the summer convention schedule, hacking Spellmonger into a screenplay, GMing a weekly Spellmonger D&D club at my son's high school, plotting a couple of short stories in a mini-anthology to put out before Necromancer, awaiting the flood of inquiries during the production of the Magelord audiobook, overseeing the pre-production of the Knights Magi audiobook, seeing to the final preparations for the release of the Great Rectification Edition of Warmage, including transfer to print . . . and I've knocked out about 40 pages of sketches on Necromancer, in my abundant spare time.

Oh. And I've pulled up Trask's Odyssey. That's next.

Here's the thing: my production is hampered by Series Management, Series Development, and assorted business stuff. That's not a bad thing. But it does slow down my over-all production, and steps on other important things like Fan Relations and such. I mean, I've got a tentative meeting with a local meadery over doing a special Spellmonger Mead . . . stuff like that is both unpredictable and, sometimes, timely.

All that being said, Necromancer is going to be a beast, and require my full attention for a while when I get to it seriously. It's shaping up nicely in my head and on paper, with some unexpected and important plot twists right off the bat that will change everything . . . and then things get interesting. Plotted at 400,000 words, it's going to be a riot of revelations and action. It will end some plot arcs, further others, and begin yet more. By the end of the book, if I've done my job, you're going to have an entire different view of Callidore and Minalan.

Necromancer will not only be a capstone for the first ten books - the Spellmonger Ascendent - but will serve as a springboard for the next ten. It's the last ten minutes of A New Hope, right before we get to the good stuff in Empire.

It has to be better than good.

So that's where I am. With Summer Camp and my convention schedule being the only major obstacles to me grinding it out this summer, once I get to it I should be able to plow through it. It has been suggested that I release half of it at a time, considering the size. Sure, it might make me more money, but the fact is it would split up what is essentially one novel. Each of my works isn't a mere continuation of the series, but an exploration of the world through various perspectives. Splitting up Necromancer, as tempting as that might be, would not serve the book. Or satisfy the readers.

Your thoughts are appreciated, but that's pretty much where I stand, at the moment. Trygg willing, I should be able to knock out Hawklady and get the rough out to my beta readers by the end of this weekend. It should be out a few weeks after that, once I get the corrections and cover done. I'm hoping the incredible lady who did the last cover will do it again, so there might be a temporary cover on it until that happens. But it will be out in time for the summer reading season.

      Hope this answers some questions.

    5. Its rare to see an author so dedicated to his books and to his fans... Thank you, Terry.

How does one become a beta reader for your books?

    6. Wow Terry - we meed to find you some drudges.

So much exciting stuff I saw in this update. Thanks for your dedication.

Didn't know we were getting a new website but I'm excited to see it. Really excited about the new audiobooks and artwork - having your new books coming out from now on in fancy wrapping would be amazing.

Would love to know how to become a beta reader as well if there are any openings.

      Thanks for everything Terry
