Official Audiobook Launch Date for Spellmonger!

I received word yesterday from Podium Publishing that the audiobook version of Spellmonger will be available at Audible.com on February 7th!  Behold the new, professional cover they came up with!  Delight in the amazing tones of John Lee (incredible work, I'm very pleased)!  Amuse yourself for hours hearing how the character names are actually pronounced!

The cover price will be $39.99, or thereabouts, but that's a lot of hours of entertainment.  Additionally, Podium has graciously allowed me the use of the art for both my Amazon and Createspace works.  That means that you only have a limited time to buy the old version, destined to become valuable collectables after my inevitable death.

In other news, my writing schedule (which was hashed anyway) is undergoing revision, a familiar place for me to be.  I'll be releasing the short Spellmonger's Yule in conjunction with the audiobook, and then turning my attention to finishing up Hawklady before moving on to Trask's Odyssey.  After those, I'll be focusing on Necromancer, which I'm pushing to be out by midsummer.  Or late summer.  Regardless, I won't Martin you.

But there's more to do than merely write: I'm taking some time for valuable Series Development work.  Next week I'm meeting with my creative team, during which we will map out a convention schedule for the next year.  At this point, the only firm date I have is the Baltimore Comic-Con, but I'll be looking at others east of the Mississippi.  I'm also open to panels and such.  If you know a con you'd like me to appear at, let me know - and let THEM know you want me to be there.

The point of this exercise is blatantly and unapologetically commercial: I'm at the point in my career where I have a wonderful, magnificent base of fans, and a work that is primed for Prime Time.  Developing the creative elements of the series into a visual medium - either live-action or animated - is the logical next step.  That means a lot of groundwork, and I've been building a great team for just that purpose.

But wait, there's more . . . more audiobooks.  Warmage will be hot on the heels of Spellmonger, and Magelord soon after.  The smooth and professional way in which Podium does their art should see at least two or three more of the series turned into audiobooks this year.  That also implies some work on my part, because each book requires me to go back through each line and find all of the mistakes and fabricated words for inclusion in the work, so all those mistakes everyone hates get fixed.  While this is great, it takes time.  So scheduling reliably is . . . problematic.

But fear not: Necromancer will not mark the end of the series, just the end of the first third of the series.  I have twenty more novels in the main plot arc to get through.  Plus shorts, one-shots, the Cadet series, and stuff I haven't even thought of, yet.

Plus, there's the Super Secret Project, which will be released suddenly, unexpectedly, and likely to the dismay of some of my fans.   I've kept it on the shelf long enough, though, and I think it's time.  (cue dramatic music)

Thank you to everyone who expressed their sympathies for my father's passing.  He was the greatest single influence in my life, and every word I write originated, in one way or another, from him.

  2. Just rereading shadowmage. One nagging inconsistency with spellmonger that is bothering me. In Spellmonger Tyndall has a family. They are not mentioned again until shodowmage where Tyn declares his mom was a drunk and a whore. In Spellmonger his father has some land and makes it safely to the castle.

I love the stories and I know as you create these things happen.
Good luck on the new project.

But Im such an addict that waiting for books drives me crazy. The Trask stories are fine but they are not the spellmonger series. Just sayin.....

    1. It was explicitly mentioned that he comes from a disfuntional family, is part of the reason of how he sees relationships and marriage as a burden.

  3. Good to know, and yes please don't ever pull a Martin on us, please i beggg you!, i love his books but this waiting is killing me and i am a little angry that the tv series is getting the ending before the book fans, even if its a diluted version.

I also started laughing histerically when you mentioned more audiobooks and revising the books for them, i just thought of Enchanter and the many invented words related with enchantment and just lost it xD.

    1. Yes, waiting on a writer for a sequel to a popular series for years can be tough...I think Jean Auel holds my personal record...If I remember, it was over 10 years between the second to the last and the final books of her Clan of Cave Bear series.

      Delete
    2. P.C. Hodgell comes close, been reading her since GODSTALK came out 1982. She is averaging approximately in my estimation about 2 to 4 years between novels but they are worth the wait.

    3. I'm still waiting for JV Jones to finish her Sword of Shadows series...Not a peep from her since 2011 and the last book came out in 2010.I have read all of her books and they are pretty good. I hope she finishes it soon, but it's been so long that I will need to reread everything and of course re-buy everything so I can do that.

    4. Worst one for me was the Zero Sight series by B Justin Shier, two books in and he has completely dropped off the map....

    5. I'm still waiting on Patrick Rothfuss to finish his third book...

    6. How about Robert Jordan's wheel of time series? is finished but it took a long time, and he finished it from the grave......wich is what i am afraid A Song of Ice and Fire will end up like too =S

  6. Terry:

While re-reading MAGELORD, I came across a continuity error that I HOPE was fixed in the actual release (I bought the Beta release): The error that I caught was during the meeting of the Secret Tower in Magelord, where Minalan is being informed about the Forsaken, and he thinks to himself that he had never heard of them before. This is incorrect, as Hartarian did so, either at last few chapters of WARMAGE, or one of preceeding chapters of MAGELORD.

Like I said, I was one of those who caught the BETA release of MAGELORD, so you probably did get it caught in the actual release. BTW, what is up with Delman? Is it a fairly common name amongst Min's group? Either that, or he has nine lives.

You should get a bunch of free credits to for trialling audible.

    2. Thanks but I don't do audio books, reading is faster than listening and I want to know what is going to happen. Thus the sticker shock of retail.

    3. I love listening to audiobooks while I am sewing or making jewellery etc. I can't just sit down & listen, I have to be doing something or limited in what I can do in some way - driving, flying, confined to bed with illness/pain & can't concentrate on reading for example. I like Amazon's option with some kindle books to get the audiobook for a few extra pounds for if you want to switch between reading & listening depending on circumstances.

  9. I've been a reader of the Spellmonger series since the days when there was only one book, but I stopped part of the way through book 2, not because I didn't enjoy the story/writing/book, but because I don't really have time to read, but I *do* have time to listen to books. I'm very excited to see your books coming to audible and getting a bit more polish on them in the process!

    1. Working on corrections and edits from my beta readers, now. It will run about 100 pages - 45,000 words -- and I'll probably make it a .99 price point. Initial reactions have been of the "Holy Crap!" variety. But I think it's a good set-up for Necromancer. THAT one will probably run in the 400,000 word range.

    2. Ahhh the suspense is killing me.

      Delete
    3. (45000 words) / (100 pages) = 450 words per page
      400,000 words * (1 page / 450 words) = 888.8 pages

Is my dimensional analysis off, or is Necromancer going to be to be 888.8 pages long?

      Delete
    4. That's a big book. All 3 Lord or the Rings added together would be less than 500K. Hopefully only 2 more days to go.

    5. A Song of Ice and Fire = 4772 pages (for kindle box Set)
      888.8 / 4772 = 0.1862 *100 = 18.62%

Necromancer = 18.62% of the entirety of Game of Thrones!!!

      Spellmonger = 549 pages
Warmage = 961 pages (was not expecting this)
Mage Lord = ??? pages (count not in description estimated = 500)
      Knights Magi = 643 pages
      High Mage = 657 pages
      Journey Mage = 504 pages
Enchanter = 822 pages (not this either)
Court Wizard = ??? pages (count not in description estimated = 750)
      Shadow Mage = 732 pages

Extended Universe = ??? (Don't care at this point, procrastination has gone too far.)

      Hawk Maiden = 300 pages
Road to Sevendor = 360 pages
      Honeymoon = 182 pages

      Total = 7172

      7172 / 4772 = 1.5 * 100 = 150% of A Song of Ice and Fire

  11. Terry - Not that I am super excited about another foray into the world of the Spellmonger...but should I wait up until Midnight with the hopes the novella drops tonight, or can I get a sleepless night of tossing and turning waiting to see if it is there at 8am in the morning when I get to work...only to lose the day of work due to reading?? What are my options??

I have enjoyed every book so far and I am so relieved that audible is becoming available too. Recovering from surgery gave me a big block of recuperation time, so I had that time to. Just read!!! Wonderful series, a d beautiful writing, the story takes the reader along with the character's adventures. I'm looking forward to many more hours of pleasant reading.

  27. First allow me to offer you my most heartfelt thanks for a fantastic series. I stumbled onto Spellmonger on Audible. It hooked me and I listened to it every waking moment that I wasn't working. Then I separately bought extra credits because who could wait the month for Warmage? Fortunately you were just about to release Magelord, so by the time I finished Warmage, Magelord was available and I didn't ahve to wait for my pre-order to arrive. Whew - Dodged that bullet.
Now, however I am sitting, forlorn and wondering when I might be able to listen to Knights Magi. Oh, I'll likely buy the ebook, but I rarely have the time to read as I am on the road regularly. I've been told its dangerous to drive and read, but I am sorely tempted...

It sounds like you are a busy as any reader could hope their favorite author will be, so I won't pester you about when Knights Magi will be in audiobook format. No, really. I won't...

Okay, if you have any idea, I'd really love to know. No pressure or anything.

Again, thank you for writing and providing us with immense pleasure. Also, fantastic choice of narrators for the audiobooks; John Lee is perfect.
