Happy New Year!

Hey, folks, Happy New Year!

I know you have been begging for an update – or at least proof-of-life – so I thought it was time for that.  Long story short, I’ve been resting and recovering from finishing Necromancer, handling some personal business, and enjoying the holiday season.

I’ve always had a deep and abiding love for the winter holidays, and after the effort of Necromancer I felt I owed myself and my children some dedicated time and effort to them, this year.  A grand time was had by all, and provided some much-needed restoration.  Then I finished off with going to Grove Park Inn in Asheville, NC, to celebrate my 20th wedding anniversary with my wife, Laurin.  Lastly, I’ve been grieving the death of my father, who passed away a year ago January 3rd.

This last bit has probably preoccupied me more than anything else, honestly.  Writers are weird.  Our grief process is often tied up in our need to express our emotions through prose, and I credit the dedication I had to finishing Necromancer in large part to my need to process my father’s death.  Yes, I know, Necromancer didn’t deal with that sort of thing . . . but it’s not so much the subject as the process.

Thankfully, I have few unresolved issues with my dad.  We had a great and loving relationship with few of the father/son issues that typically crop up.  Most of my process has been about understanding my new role in the family and in life, without my father’s constant presence and support.  Having seen how grief can affect a person, I’ve had a relatively easy time of it.

So now I’m rested, relaxed, and ready to hit the new year with ambition.

Alas, some of that ambition will take months to appear.  My focus this month is on finishing up some stuff with the printed versions of the book, starting the next audiobook adaptation, continuing to organize the Atlas, and working with Aaron Schwartz on developing the first Spellmonger D&D module.  Oh, and trying to get the basic website up.  And arranging art.  And sending out long-overdue fan gifts.  And planning a local book release party at Gallery 71, because, y’know, I just gotta.

And that’s January.

February and beyond will involve Skyrider, the first short in a while, and Trask’s Odyssey.  I’m also hoping to catch up on some fan mail.  And continue to roll out audiobooks as fast as possible.
But to warn you, I’m setting up for the next 10 book cycle.  That involves a lot of research.  What I can tell you about the next book is that it will be called Thaumaturge (unless I change it), it will be Min-focused, and it will concern how he tries to build his desolate fief in the Wilderlands into Sevendor 2.0.  while dodging undead lords and gurvani and figuring out how to make snowstone and appease the Sea Folk.  Hilarity ensues.

It’s going to be an industrious, but quiet, year.   I’m still looking for a good venue for a TV deal, and a lot of this year will focus on prepping the ground for that.  Don’t look for me often on FB – as much as I enjoy it, it’s a time-sink.  But I will continue to keep you abreast of developments here and, when it’s ready, on the new website, as well as FB.

(And let’s be honest . . . I’ve already started writing scenes for Thaumaturge.  Even though I promised myself I wouldn’t.  I just can’t be trusted . . . )

I hope all my Spellomongrels had a safe and happy holiday season, and wish you a serene Briga’s Day!

Terry

  1. Terry is great to hear from you! Life is full of wonder when you are enthusiastic and have ambition and goals that you enjoy working towards. Don't want to get you sicker into questions about the books past or future but you know it's going to happen. But for now Happy New Year! May it be blessed with love, joy and success. Don't make us wait 365 days for the next book but if it takes that or longer we still gobble it up when available!

  2. Thanks for the update!I do not know how I will wait so long for the next bit of the story, but I am glad you are taking your time to do it right and spending time with family.

  8. I'm rereading the Spellmonger series to celebrate New Year's and its going great so far. I can't help but contemplate short story concepts like Penny's journey from Remere to Boval Vale that you might write someday.

Necromancer really blew me away and I can't wait until Thaumaturge.

Thank you for your awesome stories.

  9. Sevendor 2.0 ... Should we start the wild speculations on how Min will try to recreate Snowstone?

Theory One: Looking at notes from previous experiments by Dunselen he tries to recreate Snowstone but is subconsciously worried about undead attacks and instead creates an area that negates the undead spell workings when the enter the area...

Theory 2: Looking at Dunselen's notes and with his own experience he actively recruits raja rich females that have children on the way and does recreate it turning the anvil into one giant mountain of snowstone...then he starts experimenting with trying to cause other affects such as negating undead spells.

Feel free to pick it apart or elaborate...

    1. Since the book is called Thaumaturge, it seems likely that he will be studying the Snowstone spell in detail along with learning how to use the Snowflake/Celestial Mother. I think he'll eventually find a way to create snowstone without the need of childbirth and maybe he'll finally figure out how to use hoxter pockets without killing living things inside of them, and be able to move troops around that way instead of the Ways.

dara's two books so want more ;)

  11. Am really looking forward to both Skyrider and Thaumaturge. I would also like for Min to build a big Highway system like the roman's did - he has to use all that labour and money he has now for something constructive.

  12. Happy New Year!

Looking forward to the next ten books.

Thank you for checking in. It was disturbing that you did not make any new posts.

  14. Do we have any idea about the next audio books release date? Thanks

  15. Audio books ... Shmaudio Books. Let's advance the character development. Gimme SKyRider, build out that teaser on the Sevendor baths...would love more Knights Magi adventures. outsource all that Audiobook stuff and author up. :)

But in all seriousness, I really enjoy your writing and am looking forward to several teasers/Novellas/short stories this year. And as always, I humbly volunteer my services to be a Beta reader for you.

  16. Skipping most of the comments for fear of having something spoiled. Anyway, awesome work. I'm on the third book. Seeing how you're also going to put this series into a D&D adaptation is amazing.

I'm looking forward to getting through the remaining series. Also, hoping this series could be picked up by Netflix or something.

I think at this point, is there a map over the entire place. I do okay picturing different areas, but it cant get a bit confusing.

    1. At the risk of sounding arrogant, HE's not. I am. I am also planning to run the module prior to publishing it, austensibly as a playtest.... but actually because I just want to run the game. Also, the adaptation mechanics need some fine tuning. I am homebrewing the shit out of this to accomidate irionite, snowstone, and the various races.

see the bottom for my post on the subject

  17. Just re-read necromancer and had a thought. The meteorites/asteroid debris that fell and created the null magic zones, I assume because they were from beyond magosphere. Does that mean that all the teka, especially the beast tank are like dragons and immune to magic like dragons are? I reach this conclusion from the teka coming from outside the magosphere.

  18. Hi Mr. Mancour,

Just recently started listening to your books on Audible an have enjoyed purchasing all four so far. I was wondering when the next book will be coming out on Audible or a place we're I may purchase copy's of your works. An I would love to see a D&D module based on this, I was already tying to incorporate ideas I got from listing to your books into my own campaign. Either way thank you for spending your time and passion on these works, I can't wait to make more purchase an support your work.

    Sincerely
    Norman J. Heabel III.

  21. Hello, Terry! I stumbled across your Spellmonger books through Amazon and am now a huge fan. Unfortunately, due to age and work,I find it difficult to read a lot. I've truly enjoyed listening to John Lee's telling through Audible. I'm wondering if/when the next book will be available on Audible. Thank you for the wonderful story!

  22. I just found your books few months ago, and I really enjoyed 1-4 . I really did not like the chapter 2 of book 2 ( i think ) about the horrible way the human family was killed and displayed. I understand it might have been necessary for us readers to experience / invoke emotions but i did not expect you vividly describe it. I am looking forward to rest of the books on audible

  23. GOOD EVENING ADVENTURERS!!

My name is Sire Aaron Schwartz, Knight Mage of Sevendor, and official Baronial Dungeonmaster of House Mancour

I was going to wait and have terry post my words as a main blog post instead of as a reply, but terry seems to have gone and spoiled the surprise...

I am currently in the proccess of adapting D&D 5e for use in the world of Callidore. I have worked out stat and ability breakdowns for playing as Humans, Tal Alon, Karshak Alon, Alon Dradrien, Alka Alon, and Terra Alon.

Most of the classes won't change that much, except for a few twists I've added in about the possession of witchstones. The one exception to that is that Warlocks do not exist on callidore in any form. so their out. clerics and paladins are allowed, but only human ones, for obvious reasons.

As for the campaign, I already have the broad strokes down...
It takes place during the events of Journeymage, in the Penumbra, but away from the Great March. If you recall, Minalan asked Astyral to start a few wars too distract the goblins. I wonder what Astyral did next.......

I have listened too WAAAAY to many D&D podcasts to not try anything less than a grand long term campaign. what I've planned so far, and what terry wants to make into a module, is merely what I hope is the first step on a Grand Adventure!

Here's the thing. I am a hardcore roleplayer, and I want my characters to be too. I am going to stream this, so everyone who wants to can watch, but if you want to play, start writing a backstory. Due to campaign necessity, at least 2 of the players MUST be humans conscripted into the iron band. That should give you a jumping off point. It doesnt have to be pages long, but it does have to fit the cannon.

Remember, if my campaign goes well enough, it might actually BE cannon for later books..

    food for thought ;)

  24. Looking at all the comments here, mine are a bit tame. I must say since picking up the Spellmonger and on to read all its 10 books and novellas I am eagerly awaiting the next book. Hoping that doesn't take too long, I am the ancient age of 60, how weird is that I really will be into my mid 60s to see the outcome of the series. This does confirm however that the books do actually appeal to the more nature reading fraternity.

    1. Btw if there is a d&d like game being formed up and worked on, date i confess that I am an avid player of role play and online games, from wow to Destiny 2 to guild wars, elite dangerous, arc, and well loads more. I don't play half as much as I used to, but I am retired so I really want to keep those grey cells going. I started my online game fascination way back in its infancy with dreamscape in the days of CompuServe and dial up modems. I can feel those joints creaking now. I even still have my very first 386 computer, with Windows 3.1 on floppy discs. It still works but groans along. Takes ages to boot up and now we are so used to complaining it the pc spends more that a few seconds to boot up or get online.

  25. I just finished listening to book 4 Knight magi. In he epilog they mention Estazee hall (the domain Ron, Tydal and Festeral conquered). Why did Minelano think the name significant?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Estasi Hall. Its significant because its named after Estasia, the girl that got killed at the academy by Rellin Pratt when he tried to steal Tyndal's witchstone.

  29. well, Terry, if your looking for a teleplay/screenwriter, thats award winning, I know of one. You get a treatment, 120 page screenplay/teleplay ( 1 page =1 minute of screentime), NDA, and you get full copyright of the screenplay/teleplay. Let me know. They require a copyright license of use from your publisher for Spellmonger as source material for the derivative workk ( screenplay/ teleplay)

  30. Minalan never did do anything with his domain of Laripose, which is one of the lands Rard granted to him when he became a barony.. As its basically inside of East Fleria's lands I expect something to happen to it during Minalan's exile..

Also I hope there is some exploring of the special items that the Sea Folk gave to him when he sold that mountain. Some sorts of new coral that hasn't been seen before, I'm sure, but maybe some other artifact similar to irionite.. And with Min wanting to rescue the Forsaken he would need some way to access Perwyn, so I bet something will allow him to breathe underwater or some such thing.

  36. IKR? It's like he just disappears or something.

Conversely, he's intensely involved in a project. Or six. And a new puppy. Like being about half-way done with Sky Rider, almost done with Trask's Odyssey, finished the audiobook of Journeymage, preparing for the audiobook of Enchanter, setting up the con schedule for the summer, working on the Atlas and the D&D module and sourcebook, arranging art, screwing with the covers on the print copies so they won't look effed up, getting the print copies approved and released, and . . . I'm sure I missed something. Oh, working on a few short stories. That's in there.

And there's a puppy. Did I mention the puppy?

  37. suggestion for castle design: The way the seamages took the chunk out of the mountain, they could be persuaded to take the next chunk from areas as directed. Specifically, carving the exterior of the mountain into a fortress. And, possibly pulling from the edge of the outer ring to create a wall or other barrier to keep the stuff form walking off so to speak. The mountain could be carved into a steeply sloping wall 90 feet high with a flat area 10 feet wide above it for example. Also, the area around where they took snowstone previously, on top of the two mini mountains, could be flattened on top so would have two highly defensible areas overseeing the new bridge.
