Revised Writing Schedule

According to my original writing schedule, I should be getting close to releasing Hawklady in a few days or weeks.

That's not how things played out.

I have a rare medical condition known as dysautonomia, and over the course of the last ten days or so I have enjoyed three separate ER visits followed by hospital stays.  If some of you may recall, I had an attack just a day or so after the release of Enchanter.  Same thing, only a longer and more vicious attack this time.

While my brilliant wife is figuring out what's wrong with me in connection with the entire medical research establishment, that has put a damper on my writing, and after consultation with the docs I'm going to have to slow things down for the rest of the year, while I accommodate some medical-related travel, tests, and shamanistic practices.  That wouldn't be a problem, if I'd been writing the 17 chapter, 90k word Hawklady at the time.

I wasn't writing Hawklady at the time.

When I got back from my hiatus after the post-Enchanter hospitalization, instead of sticking to the schedule like a good boy, I started writing (and have continued writing) Court Wizard, Pentandra's story, instead.  I'm a good bit into it, and hope to get a good deal more into it in the next month, but thanks to the whims of the gods an the nature of managed care, I don't have a definite release date, page count, or other details just yet.  Hell, not even sure how it ends yet.  But it should be over 150k words and likely out sometime in October/November, but I cannot promise anything yet.

Here's what I can promise:

1) Special Yule Surprise in terms of marketing/worldbuilding . . . details to come! (Excited about this one - Lanse of Bune is all over it)

2) YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST: CreateSpace and Audible versions of Spellmonger are in the works!  Details to come!  More books to come!

3) More shorts.  Yeah, yeah, I know, you've heard it all before.  But you'll see more shorts before you see another novel.

4) More updates.  I'm recovering, so I've been ignoring things for awhile, but I'm ramping up a bit now.

5) Yes, I've been working on TO.  No, it's not finished.  Yes, you'll be the first to know.

Thanks, folks.  I was so hoping for six books and six shorts by the end of the year.  Let's see what happens.

Terry

  11. Hi Terry,
Hopefully you do read the comments on your blog because this one may be one of the most important as it may be able to improve your health. As an avid reader of the Spellmonger series, I receive your post this morning in my email. Our company just launched (2 weeks ago) a campaign to develop a NHP to fight neurodegenerative diseases by complexing over 30 bioactive compounds that have been shown to be neuroprotective.

We have 3 basic driving positions with regard to neurodegenerative diseases:
    (1) Big Pharma's search for "novel" compounds to fight neurodegenerative diseases are wasteful and a reflection of their greed, not a result of there being a lack of known compounds that is shown to be neuroprotective. While they are busy searching and wasting resources, patients are suffering and dieing without effective therapies.
    (2) All neurodegenerative diseases are metabolic diseases with multiple causative pathological pathways, and therefore needs to be attacked simultaneously and continuously on multiple fronts. This means you need a therapy that is multi-modal and not have serious toxic side effects.
    (3) All neurodegenerative diseases (e.g. ALS, Alzheimer's, Huntington, Parkinson's MS, MSA, Dyautonomia, etc.,) are all the same disease, just taking place at different CNS/ANS locations with different contributing weights/impacts from the causitive pathological pathways.

  15. Hi Terry!

I sorry to hear of your recent ill health! Don't forget that as much as we cry and plead for more of your amazing books I'm sure all of use would rather you recover so we can experience your books for years and years to come.

Great news on the Special Yule Surprise and CreateSpace and Audible versions of Spellmonger in the works!! I'm a huge fan of Audible (long commute into work) so really looking forward to 'reading' Spellmonger again :)

Again, glad to hear that your recovering!! It was brave of you to 'come out' and talk about your condition, I know from experience that doing so can be difficult and not always a positive experience. Look after yourself and your family, they're the ones who matter the most, books come secondary :)

Anyway, great to see you posting and writing again!

    Thanks

I wanted to e-mail this, but alas I couldn't find an email address (I do hope you read this). I believe I was one of the firsts who read your (second) book - Spellmonger, and I loved every page! The amazing thing though is that you kept on publishing great work and following your page just added an extra bonus.
So what's the point in this post? Well, I guess you could say I just wanted to finally say hi!, wish you a speedy recovery from all the way here (Israel, cool that you can reach so far huh?), and just take care of yourself.

  20. Hey Terry,

Take care and I hope for your good health going forward.

Just a quick question, will Court Wizard overlap Enchanter a bit where Pentandra goes quite the order or will it after Enchanter....or a little of both?

    ReplyDelete
  21. Take care terry.

moving on from this thoroughly depressing topic,

I was wondering why there were so many inconsistencies in Enchanter with regard to the irionite given by the alka alon at the Coronation. 21 stones, created by the alka to be potent weapons of war. 7 horkan stones, 7 hesian stones, 7 for the spellmonger, reffered to in Knights Magi and High Mage as "the Spellmonger's 7"

    however in Enchanter:
1: they are only ever called "the 7 stones" as if the other 14 didn't exist.
2: Onranion states that the stones were only minor creations for sentries, instead of weapons of war.

Another thing, Are we ever going to find out what the any of the "Big brilliant discoveries/plans" that were made during enchanter but were not explained were? (The last snowclay pot baked in the everfire, assorted other teasers that I go over in a post on the spoiler thread for enchanter after it came out)

Also, I want to go on record stating that I thought the floating casing for the witchsphere was a stupid, risky idea from the get-go. that being said, I can't wait until we find out what he meant about making minalan "something more substantial"

    3. Not to be "that guy" but dude... I have to wonder, do you even like the series at all? I mean.. Like every other post I see from you is basically bashing the books from book to book. In enchanter, all he was talking about was the seven stones that he held in reserve for his personal seven as the fighting force if someone breaks their bond with him. IE: Why would he talk about the other fourteen that are dedicated to a specific sourcing task. Attack or support, rather than the seven he has dedicated to be used as however he sees fit? For the stones themselves, Onranion says that, sure, but they're still by far and away more advanced than the simple stones they get from the dead god. So while to an Alka they are 'minor' specially to one as old as Onran. To the humans, they're godly. Easily tellable by perspective if you read it man. Second... If he explained everything in a single book, there'd be no need to have several books in the series. Patience dude. Patience.

      Delete
    4. 1: but he was talking about stones that were clearly not of the "spellmonger's 7" The stone that Azar has, and the one that Carmella has clearly belong to their order's respective 7. and he called their stones "one of the 7 stones"

2: but the Alka who presented them to Min at the coronation specifically stated that the stones were considered even among the Alon to be deadly weapons of war and nothing else. According to the ferrangallan envoy, they were designed and built for deathdealing. Onranion contradicts that by calling them "sentry stones" and even suggesting that the enchantments on them were supposed to be used for escaping via the ways.

these books are not without plotholes. I talk about them here to pass the time between books, to gain insights from other fans and (I hope) put them on display for the author who might not have noticed them originally so that he might correct/address them in subsequent books.

      Delete
    5. As to the other elements of your comment…..
You are mistaken. I suppose I can understand your perspective, so I am not offended, but I can tell you unequivocally that this is one of my favorite series of all time. And I have been a bibliophile since first grade.

What you see as bashing, I do out of love for the books, since there is actually a chance that terry will see my writings and use some of my insights in future stories. I also do it to engage in dialogue with other fans, as they have insights that I value. Take Steve Allen for example. He had the idea that the witchsphere 2.0 might hook into the snowflake. I had not considered that. Maybe Terry hadn't even planned that, but since we all know he watches this thing, he might see it and think "thats a great idea" and put it into the series.

I put my honest insight on these pages because I know terry knows that even his stories are not perfect and he has a thick skin. If you go back to the initial thread following the release of enchanter you will see that I have wrote things much harsher than this, and terry responded directly saying that he didn't mind critique.

  22. Not at all. I encourage it.

But as to some of the "inconsistancies" in the plot, consider, my friends, that some characters are not always entirely truthful - for their own reasons - in imparting information. And some of it depends on perspective. The sentry stones were not, strictly speaking, the kind of sophisticated weapons of war the Alka Alon used on each other in their ancient wars. But compared to the gurvani stones they are highly sophisticated. We'll learn more about these stones in Court Wizard.

  23. Just for my clarification, as we see things through Min's memory so to say.. then we will still get fed all the "false" and "misinformation" that he should know from the tellers point of view wasn't true.. ?

i mean as in Enchanter the wall of gold story is basicly over before it's begun because he starts by saying that it all worked out and Almost got him into a war...

so basically he's telling us a story (writhing a diary - or whatever), but he still includes the misinformation he received at a earlier stage?

i'm just trying to understand the perspective of the stories...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Even with Min we can get false information. If you recall, when Min spoke with Hartarian way back and the Censor General asked him if he had every heard of the Forsaken, he said no. So we don't know if he was just lying to the general or forgot, because it had come to his attention earlier.

      Delete
    2. Apparently, The Forsaken are very difficult to remember. Min Appears to have never heard of them again in Magelord when he meets with the Secret Order of the Tower during the formation of the Orders at (Robynhall?)

Anyways, the reality is that Terry is an indie author, and he sells us his work for a very reasonable price. He doesn't have a publisher with an entire team devoted to ensuring that there are no inconsistencies, at least not at the same level as a publisher, nor does he have people who can go back and correct them while he continues to work on the next volume. I'm sure that breaking away from his writing to go back and fix mistakes that occurred in his previous volumes does little to excite his muse so I'm okay with small inconsistencies like this.

I'll buy that many of these inconsistencies are misinformation from different point of views, but obviously they aren't all such. I don't see a problem bringing them to the authors attention though. Terry may eventually decide that he wants to clean some of them up and upload an update. Having fans point out where they are located can ease the burden quite a bit. I would caution fans to be conscious of the how their post may be perceived, especially if they are just trying to be helpful. I think Terry has pretty thick skin, and can handle having a few errors pointed out to him, but I am less sure of his following and have seen more than a few flame wars in this blog in the past.

Are we going to learn more about her situation in Court Mage? Are we going to meet the human mage she was seen with? Is her dragon friend going to be a "friendly" dragon???

    Spellmonger
    Warmage
    The Road to Sevendor
    The Spellmonger's Honeymoon
    Magelord
    Knights Magi
    High Mage
    Journeymage
    Enchanter

Hawkmaiden can be read at any time after Magelord as it occurs at the same time but from a different perspective.

There is a full map in Warmage but its on the primitive side,

  44. Glad you're doing better Terry, and hope you had a great Thanksgiving.

I'm still pretty new to the series, but it seems to me that the order of the beginning of the series would be:

    Spellmonger
    Warmage
    Road to Sevendor (first half):
    ---River Mists of Talry
    ---Victory Soup
    ---Spellmongers Wedding
    Spellmongers Honeymoon
    Magelord
    Road to Sevendor (2nd half):
    ---The Wizard of Birchroot Bridge
    ---The Secret of Westwood Hall
    ---The Road to Sevendor

The only reason I say this is that it seems "The Secret of Westwood Hall" spoils Magelord. I stopped halfway through and jumped to Honeymoon, then I'll read Magelord. Maybe someone who is farther along in the series can confirm?

Was thinking, why doesn't they establish a transport network like the mirrors with the supply rods also, i mean, then you could charge a fee for transporting goods via the dogs just like you transport messages through the mirrors.. sevendor could be the hub for instance then all the mirror towers could send and receive goods via sevendor making money and turning the traffic around inside the bontal valleys and other places making the order towers much more important :) I'm just waiting for this.. especially as a way of avoiding tolls crossing all the domains of castalshar.

Seems like there are so many uses for these different enchantments that are not being utilised very efficiently :) what do you think about it?

    2. Hi again Pete,

sorry to disappoint you regarding the posts, my telephone decided to repost the same post 3 times...

I don't think that it's unreasonable to suggest the transport system, with the transport rods they basically built a teleportation device for normal cargo (non living).

What do you think about the idea Pete? What do you hope happens in the next book?

      Cheers

ps. Terry - hope the diet is working out still, looking forward to next update

      Delete
    3. Its a fucking bad idea, the transport system would destroy the economy. You make most people working in the cargo system jobless, missing tolls (for people AND cargo), inns go bankrupt. I think you see my point...

      Delete
    4. I don't think that it is a bad idea. You also get cheaper things which means that people are more able to buy other things, which can increase the velocity of money in the economy which helps create other jobs outside of what disruptions to the jobs for transportation. At the same time the old transport system wouldn't be completely removed. The magical transport system would most likely be set up as hubs in connection to the towers for communication. Which means that they are going to set it up like how trains are in our history. And the local transportation jobs wouldn't be touched much, which is where most of the jobs are in the first place. With the individual magic users able to have their own private pockets but it's uncertain if those would be part of a transport system or just their own private safe/storage area. Also this would mean, in a similar manor to trains, that you can ship far more food with less spoilage, which lowers the price of food. Which means less starvation, and thus more people are able to live which means more people/soldiers in a generation. On another point I wonder how Terry would view how one could send a living being through those rods, I'm thinking if they were in an air tight container they would be fine for the moment that it takes to go from point A to point B. Unless there is some reason that's not possible for some as yet unexplained reason.

      Delete
    5. Ive been traveling, so didnt get round to answer the other comment.

I like the picture or railstations. But as im. Working as a shipbroker i could use the containerports as a n example, you take cargo to the port its packed, or shipped in bulk to the next port where the local transport system collect it from the port.

The issue woth people loosing their job carrying stuff its the same argument for the plowing and mowing wands then.. lets stop progress...

Around every tower you would have a zone with The trafik going into and out from again, and heavy industry located close by, but all the raw materials that are being produced in that area would be carted in and ofc that would mean, inns, roads and so on.. but basically, this industrial revolution going on right now can't be stopped, all the free hands should be invested in the military or service sector, i guess a transport tower would require at least a 100 person's to be able to receive, categorise, label, bill, register, and transport the cargo - comparing to a working port, so plenty jobs right there :)

      Have a nice evening

    6. that still means that ´MANY major crossroads would go bancrupt. People in the medival age didnt sell much to small towns, they were supposted to produce grain ect.
The Spellmonger has TWO pocketstones for now (one got stolen) and Taren (the sage) is one of the few people outside Sevendor who used them so where does that talk about pockets for any wizzard come from?
This system would ruin the lifes of MANY people, whole estates depend on this...
The pocketstones WILL be used to transport people (one of the things Briga told him in his fever dream) and Taren mentioned that he could probably do it after talking about the creater of the spell to include necessity components (air like you said)

      Delete
    7. The idea of pockets for any wizard would came from Min's announcement that he would train any wizard that wanted to know about all of the improvements that they made in enchantment. The wizards wouldn't be able to create new ones once they left, but they definitely would create a set for themselves. Much like what everybody who was there during Enchanter did for themselves. It was an extrapolation of what could come from it. Also freeing up people from being dependent on the farm means that you can field more troops, think Napoleonic war period and how armies started to get very very large, it was the early stages of the agricultural revolution that happened prior to the industrial revolution in our own history. Min is going to have to get all those hands off the farm if he is going to have a chance to stop the Dead God.

      Delete
    8. hi again,

Yeah, i don't see it as a problem if "major crossroads" would go bankrupt, many cities/villages that were very popular and successfull in the middle ages didn't make it through the industrial revolution, and again since then many cities have merged into bigger cities or stopped existing completely, it's just the way progress works.

I don't know about being able to transport people/living animals in a hoxter pocket as Lodrik says, can't seem to find the qoute that he's referring to.

All the enchantments with hoxter pockets are still monopolized by Min and friends.. but making the wristband that Rael is having for instance would be a very easy and extremely profitable investment of their time.

Trade never stops, the current just changes around, like a river that starts flowing the different direction to earlier. all the estates would still be able to apply tolls just the same just on the opposite direction, actually i think the only people to suffer from this would be the bargemen... consider a bakery like mins familys, able to supply the product to a lot of vendors around the kingdom from one big bakery for instance...

Traders buying produce like grain and beans from the other end of the kingdom via the mirrow, receiving it by rod.

I don't think it would be a problem at all, on the contrary.

    9. i think they first need to work on using the way points to transport people without having to go through themselves, min takes two or three people then goes back takes two or three more, so himself plus 6 equals three trips. 7-9 people = 5 trips
if he sends 3 people through, then three more he only has to go once himself, which means less minor concusions 1 vs 3 to seld himseld and 6 people

  50. Love the series, but just a little disappointed in the last book with the ending is all. I hope it is leading up to something because of the hint of her possible talnet that was hinted at in the previous book.

  51. Has anyone seen any updates here or on facebok?

  52. Hey Terry...So glad to hear you are getting better. When I looked up the disease you have, it looked really bad - MS, Lupus, Lymes, yech!

So how are you doing since Thanksgiving? How about a little update on you, personally, if you don't mind. And definitely about the books. I'm sure this crew of hard core blog followers would be happy with the e-arc of anything you happen to have going. Have a happy Solstice. May your light return with brightness. LLC

  58. terry glad to hear you are doing better i need to keep up with the blog threads more rather than just main blog

so many questions i want to ask after having reread the series last week, and a few ideas for what min could do next. (ie) take snow clay or metal shavings or etc and lightly enchant them. start with a score and have them actively scan for magic aimed at min, maybe include blue magic counterspells to prevent something similar to isialys rape of min. then add hoexter pockets to summon more (snow flakes) start with 1000 about a snowballs worth, add cold spells to make it seem like snowfall, each one gets a single spell stick with primarilly defensive ones but add a meta control telikenetic spell so they move, maybe a jellyfish type enengram, eventually as min ges stronger dd more 'snowflakes' eventually a few million. no one snowflake has any real power but millions upon millions of spells and counter spells and physical mass would make a good offensive ind defensive midrange weapon. call it avalanche and have one of its abilitys to amke more snowflakes from local materials, particuarly snow stone or clay.

  59. i also have a few general questions i am hoping anyone else could help me with.

    first some outline

    counting from timberwatch
one year) first half road to sevendor > wedding > magelord up to first magical fair
year two) first magical fair > cambrian > yule celebration (ron and tyn leave) knights magi part one, highmage through alon council > knights made part two, high mage aprox chap 17 (give or take) > high amge ch19 (second magical fair), knights magi part 3 and 4
year three) second magical fair highmage ch20,21 > gavard castle and the frozen poros > battle of the red ice/ fall of antivael > treaty > princes wedding > joerney mage >snowflake creation> tyn ron journymen papers? masters exams?
Year 4) isily rapes min at third magical fair > boletarian > Amell wood slaughter > invasion of rolone / invasion of salista federation > mage war on dunseel >

so who one the second spell mongers trial? it seems it is always wait till you hear, then we hear and its the guy who won the third...?

is there anyway we can get a more accurate timeline, maybe aproximations of dates based of major holidays, brigas day luins day etc. with a time line for min (main story) ron/tyndal, penny, anguin, cei (secondarys)
anguin short story starting just before timberwatch? maybe up to corinaion, or royal wedding. even an after story to indicated marrital prospects (dara?) someone with magical ability would tie magical subjects to him more than the king, a counts niece that had to be reneobled after finding out she had magic.

can we get better maps, maybe introduce a cartograpger working for lady arnet, or have a few of lance's apprentices present a massive diorama to min as a yule gift covering the barony or even the county? (masters exams)

  60. dunseel was commanded to open six new schools, while green flower seems to be a prime place for one now, and anguin tower a second to cover magic and engineering (anvilite head master?) what progress has he made?
will the schools have ironite in a set up similar to the bolletarion?
if a spell took a day to teach then charge and use repeat for a week to confirm having learned it, can mages then betrained at a faster rate with an apis to share power and instructor having own or university ironite? what is the affect snowstone has had upon teaching?
blue stone is for other world but dunseel had previous successes while less than the 30 yard (radius/diameter?) of his final experiment what were his other successes and what do those stones do? hence why green flower maybe a prime location for one of the universities.
is the blue tinting to skin eyes and teeth actually present in the snowstone effect but since it is dying white things white less prevelant or hidden better by melletonin in the skin?
are children naturally immune or where all children outside of the "other stone(s)"? alon reaction ot other stone(s)?
does rundeel have any iron or copper pockets which could be used in forging weapons (snowblades?)
olmeg mention magical plants and one {spider like} creature it uses to pollinate, gareth mentions magical animals which will take advantage of low etherteric densities, mention is also made of it altering native species, with the exception of now death creatures who are being used for eningrames what other magical creatures are there, when / how will they show up? also inclusie of the white tinting effect which should have been in snow that never melted spell, is a brown rabbit now white, unaltered would have stood out and been eaten by predators, altered would have maintained camouflage and breed, but be easy prey upon exiting snowfall circle (cool way to add horns and create the mythical jackalope)does this mean they are confined to the two mile radius, did they develop active camo?
terel and min talk about building automatons which are pieces put together with a central core. while rondal makes limited progress along these lines, lance builds marle (eight legged wagon puller) using a core hinged attachment limbs etc, would not building more along these lines, perhaps upgrading the shield beast to have a few offensive brothers be advisable? perhaps even go as far as the weed knights from the spellmongers honeymoon, an ice themed night be it a full metal alchemist style hollow armor or a shield and sword made from shaped ice (i could see rondal making one from solid stone and tyndal from wood) be the ultimate goal of eningramic enchantment? maybe a perminate fire elemental which sites in a brazier in the new main hall to the mountain (glacier? giant mountain of snow), or something which could fly (capture one of dara's falcons when it dies) air elemental used in a glider like contraption to build some sort of mundane useable air transport (joppo the root, ferrying goods by air) less efficent than pocket stones but combine the two for cargo capacity but not bogged down by muddy roads, year round travel, basically small two seater planes.

  61. terminology:
sir vs sire was explained but is sagal for instance a sire if he now holds southridge hold or is he only sir since doesnt own a domain?
domain lord > barronett > baron was explained very well something i have never seen in another book which uses the terms, we get a breif understanding of count from dranuis' story but viscount is left out all together, some one who holds multiple barronys? younger son of a count who might control (random proportion) a 1/3 of a county? are they the paper counts, the ones given rank by curtesy with out the temporal power?
how large of a holding is a standard domain, barony, county?
do we finally have terminology of a none mage spouse of a magelord? simple lord and lady or does magical aspect of title transfer? (alya upon promotion to baroness)
what exactly makes a castle dragon proof and how do the karsac propose to do that if the alka never thought to work it into their own refuge?
can the same eningram be used more than once? does it degrade with multiple uses? once removed from ghost rock is it gone for good, stuck in the transfer crystal? how long can it stay in the crystal, could min load one up, send it to penny in vorne or corrman in forgemont and one of them use it?

OK sorry more than a few questions and terrry is the one to answerr most.
but it might not be a bad idea for two new threads
1 enchantment ideas, just stuff terry could uuse to help with the story ie the avalanche i talked about in last post
2 technical questions of how certian things work of a non magical aspect (political rank/guild set up, local county wide, duchy/kingdom wide)

    O and one last question
family tree of the gods (narsi perwyn tribal) exclude minor / local gods unless mentioned in the text. make special note of any which cross over, maybe a narsi god got it own with an emperial god and new god came out of it (my guess for mins future) or how one god kept followers while switching pantheons

    maybe include spheres of influence
briga: fire archery black smithing, baking, poetry, avangin

    1. I think you're confusing knighthood with being ennobled. Sir and Sire a titles related to knighthood; a landholding knight being Sire. Being ennobled is different. That would provide a tile or Lord or Lady as well as applying to progeny (where knighthood is not by default). Sagal was ennobled by Min... not knighted. His title would be Lord Sagal.

  64. Just curious if you have thought about what would happen if one of the Gods touched the Grain of Pors and if the Gods touched it what would Min be able to do with it.
